Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, telegrams, memos and government reports. Examples are: Corresp. (May-June, 1976) from Charles Leppert, Jr. (Deputy Asst. to the President) & Congressman Wilson re/ the President’s response to Wilson’s inquiry “concerning the Bold Producer and Voyager, two tuna vessels from your district” which Wilson alleged were “victims of aggression and obduracy of the Government of Panama;” a large collection of letters, memos, postal cards, telegrams sent to Wilson by his constituents & his response to them (May-June 1976) re/ the controversy over the killing of dolphins [porpoises?] as a result of fishing for tuna;” small, stapled packet containing corresp. (4/76) from Congressman Wilson, John J. Royal (Ex. Sec.-Treasurer, Fishermen & Allied Workers’ Union, Local 33, ILWU) & attached copy of a “Department of State, Division of Language Service (Translation) . . . Diario Oficial, Mexico, February 6, 1976” re/ Wilson’s & Royal’s attempts to stop bill HR 200, which “would unilaterally extend US fisheries jurisdiction 200 miles [before] the US negotiating team attending the United Nations Law of the Sea Conference . . . [can reach] an agreement on the highly contentious issue . . . .”; 1 copy of a “statement by Harold F. Gary (General Manager, Ocean Fisheries, Inc.) before the “Subcommittee on Fisheries and Wildlife Conservation and the Environment” (Washington, D.C. 5/20/76) “on: H.R. 13865” – legislation designed to alter Judge Richey’s decision “to prohibit tuna fishing in association with porpoises” & its financial impacts; stapled copies of a letter (5/12/76) from constituent Mrs. John Athaide & Wilson’s reply (5/19/76) re/ “Judge Richey’s decision is frightful” & Wilson’s comments on the misunderstanding over the species classification of porpoises and dolphins.
