Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, memos, memorandums, brochures & promotional literature. Examples are: Stapled copies of letters (10/1 & 10/3/80) from William H. Baldwin (Chairman of the Bd., The Kresge Foundation) & Congressman Wilson’s reply ((10/3/80) re/ 14 Kresge Foundation challenge grants to CA institutions in 1980 that included a $150,000 grant to the Zoological Society of San Diego; 1 photocopy of a letter (2/6/79) from Wilson to Anderson Borthwick (Trustee, S.D. Zoological Society) thanking him “for taking us to the Wild Animal Park” & the potential for trading White Rhinos for Chinese Pandas; 1 photocopy of a letter (11/7/77) from Dr. Reay Smithers (Queen Victoria Museum, Rhodesia) to Charles R. Schroeder (Dir. Emeritus, S.D. Wild Animal Park) re/ corresp. between the two as to a peaceful, or a Marxist solution to Rhodesia’s problems; stapled packet containing corresp. (Sept – Nov. 1977) from Dr. Smithers, Dr. Charles R. Schroeder & Congressman Wilson re/ Dr. Smither’s attempts to obtain a visa from the U.S. State Dept. & comments about political & ethnic strife in Rhodesia, as well as African wildlife; 1 large, stapled packet containing corresp. (Mar. – Sept. 1976) from Congress-man Wilson, Charles L. Bieler (Dir., S.D. Zoological Society), J.D. Anthony (Acting Prime Minister, Canberra, Australia), Dale Budd (Principal Private Secretary, Office of the Prime Minister, Canberra, Australia), W.P. Crowcroft (Dir., Taronga Zoo, Mosman, NSW) & constituent Mrs. Carol Faust (La Jolla) re/ corresp. primarily relating to the S.D. Zoo receiving six koalas “as a Bicentennial gift from the Australian people;” 1 copy of a letter (9/17/75) from Congressman Wilson to Charles Bieler (Dir., S.D. Zoological Society) & attached notification of photomailer (9/4/75) sent to Wilson from the S.D. Zoo re/ a 16 x 20 photo of the African Plains Exhibit & California Tower sent as a gift to the Congressman & Mrs. Bob Wilson; 1 copy of Solar Div. of International Harvester Co., Energy Specturm (Vol. 3, No. 1, Fall 1972) (15 pp.) featuring an article (& colored photographs)—“The animals are wild about their new park;” 1 “San Diego Wild Animal Park” packet containing descriptive information on the park & 1 copy of Zoo News (Vol. XLV, No. 5, May 1972); stapled copies of letters (May – June 1975) from Congressman Wilson, Thomas Niles (Dir., U.S. Commercial Office, U.S.A. Embassy, Moscow, USSR) & attached copy of “May 15, 1975 Memo Re Phone Call” from March Rich (S.D. Zoo) re/ negotiation to obtain Siberian tigers from the Soviet Union; stapled copies of corresp. (Mar. – Ap. 1972) from Marge O’Donnell (Field Representative to Congressman Wilson), phone message record—Dr. Schroeder (S.D. Zoo), David N. Parker (Staff Asst. to the President), Congressman Wilson, William E. Timmons (Asst. to the President), C.L. Bieler (Admin. Asst., S.D. Zoological Gardens) & Anderson Borwick (Pres., Bd. of Trustees, S.D. Zoological Society) re/ corresp. related to the opening of the San Diego Wild Animal Park on May 9, 1972, an invite to President Nixon, however, since the president could not be present, “we would welcome with open arms, a member of the Nixon family;” 1 “Memo for file” (1/23/72) & attached office notes re/ “Dr. Kintner of the S.D. Zoo and International Conference on endangered animals;” 1 photocopy of a letter (8/9/72) from Dr. Theodore H. Reed (Dir., National Zoological Park, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.) to Charles R. Schroeder re/ Dr. Reed’s recent visit to San Diego—“San Pasqual is more than I expected . . . .”
