Lillian Altman was a charter member of the Jewish Historical Society of San Diego. She moved to San Diego after living with her husband Hal in the Bay Area for many years. Both were active in the movement to preserve pioneer Jewish cemeteries of the Gold Rush. The materials in this collection were donated to the Jewish Historical Society of San Diego by the estate of Lillian Altman in 2001. The contents of the collection consist of correspondence and articles regarding Jews in the West and the preservation of pioneer Jewish cemeteries.
