Folder 18 Federal Government: Land – Camp Elliott 1961-1963 A large collection of letters, campaign literature, memorandum, planning dept. booklets with maps, postal cards, other items. Most of these materials are in packets and are not arranged chronologically. Examples are: a letter (2/1/61) from J. Rollin Grant (Headmaster, The Francis W. Parker School) to Leon Parma (Wilson's Admin. Asst.) & attached copy of a map indicating the school's interest in "the extreme southern tip of the Camp Elliott reservation;" a letter from constituent Curt Rottke to Wilson (2/26/62) regarding interest in using portion of Camp Elliott land for a military cemetery; a small packet of corresp. (Aug.-Sept. 1962) from constituent Mrs. L.M. Handley, Wilson, & the General Services Admin. Re/ Mrs. Handely, owner of a 358 acre tract of land" condemned and confiscated by the government" in the Camp Elliott area would like obtain her former land and feels the high bidder process is unfair. The letters contain other political information as well; letters (Aug.-Sept. 1962) from Lemon Grove constituent Perry D. Erickson, Wilson, & RAdm. M.E. Arnold (Commandant, Eleventh Naval District) re/ inquiry as to "the swimming pools located at the former Camp Elliott;" two letters and office note (June-July 1962) with attached copy of San Diego City Planning Department, "Fortuna Mtn. – Mission Gorge Metropolitan Park" – text, photos & maps (17 pp.); a large packet of corresp., maps and other planning material (1961- 1962) re/ Convair Astronautics interest "in acquiring approximately 2,750 acres of land at the former Naval Retraining Command, Camp Elliott . . . for use as a missile test facility; letters (Dec. 1962 & Jan. 1963) from San Diego City Mayor Charles Dail and Congressman Wilson and attached copy of San Diego City Planning Department, "The Elliott Community Plan" – text, photos, & maps (50 pp.); other items in this folder are: letters (May-June 1963) re/ the Francis Parker School has "decided to pass up the Camp Elliott property;" information from Assemblyman E. Richard Barnes; Wilson Memorandum (6/14/63) re/ County of San Diego acquisition of Camp Elliott land to be used as a site for an Adult Rehabilitation Center. It was adjacent to the County Sanitary Land Fill site; two Wilson Memorandum (4/63) re/ "GSA is placing on the market 5000 acres of land which was a part of Camp Elliott Military Reservation" & sale of 1.02 acres of land to San Diego City for $3,500 to use for library and fire station to serve planned community; interest in use of the Officers Club at Camp Elliott.
