Scope and Contents

A large collection of letters, press releases, memorandum, news clippings, resolutions, maps, telegrams, broachers and other items. These materials are not arranged chronologically but some are batched together with common interests. Examples are: Wilson office note (nod) re/ GSA selling -- 31 acres of Camp Elliott land to the Santee School District for $72,250; "Notification" (2/19/65) from GSA to HEW that 507 acres of land of the former Camp Elliott is being assigned to UCSD as a field station; GSA Press Release (n.d.) re/ recommendation that approximately 356 acres of Camp Elliott property be exchanged for approximately 878 acres of land within the Joshua Tree National Monument; Wilson office note (4/5/65) re/ GSA will announce "that it is accepting bids totaling approximately one million dollars for 53 parcels of land containing 880 acres at Camp Elliott;" a letter (2/25/65) from Clark Kerr (President, the University of California) to the Honorable Bob Wilson re/ "I was delighted to learn last Friday that the General Services Administration has assigned the 507 acres at Camp Elliott to the University of California for research purposes as we requested;" a packet of corresp. (June-July 1965) from La Mesa constituent Francis A. Hepburn, Congressman Wilson and Lawson B. Knott, Jr. (Administrator, GSA) re/ information from Mr. Hepburn with maps and figures concerning sale of approximately 3,000 acres of Camp Elliott land; a large packet of corresp. and other information (Ap. 1960- Ap. 1963) re/ interest of Francis Parker School in acquiring Camp Elliott land to build a high school. GSA assigned to HEW three parcels of Camp Elliott land to convey: (1) 25.22 acres to the Boys and Girls Aid Society, (2) 34.7 acres for a Francis Parker High School & (3) 113.73 acres to the County of San Diego for a sanitary land fill site; a large packet of corresp. & legal brief (Ap.-May 1965) re/ disposal of surplus Camp Elliott land & "Charlie Fletcher's request with the House Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs" and his original ownership of property; a packet of material (1964) re/ "UC matter at Camp Elliott;" other materials in this folder are: a packet containing corresp., maps, brochure, statistical data re/ a protest against rejection of Bids No. GS-09-U (R) 64-30., Camp Elliott by O.M. Flickinger & Robert M. Findlay; corresp. & brochure (1964) re/ San Diego City Schools interest in "Camp Elliott Area D School Sites;" a telegram (6/20/64) from John M Debevoise to Wilson re/ "I am opposed to the proposed transfer of Camp Elliott land to the University of California. It is an unwarranted land grab;" a packet of corresp. (1963-1964) re/ Rev. Bonaventure J. Gilmore (Principal, Salpointe High School, Tucson, AZ) interest in acquiring Camp Elliott or Camp Matthews land to be used by the Society of Mt. Carmel (Inc) for a teachers' college; 1 large copy of "Master Shore Station Development Plan Topographic Map of Area 1-NW," Dept. of the Navy, Bureau of Yards and Docks (1/1/60); DAV interest (1963) in expediting VA hospital on Elliott land; City Council candidate (1963) Jack Walsh's promotion of using 300 acres at Camp Elliott for a World's Fair site & attached interest in this by other San Diegans.
