Scope and Contents
A collection of letters, procedures, air mail schedule & other items. Examples are: letters (Apr.-May 1959) from constituent Arthur L. Watkins, Congressman Wilson, D.H. Stephens (Chief Postal Inspector), Lindsley H. Noble (Acting Asst. :Postmaster General) & a promotional letter from the United Insurance Company of America re/ Mr. Watkins complaints about the 2 cent cost of the solicitation (what he term a "sucker letter) from the insurance company and his cost of 49 cent to mail a letter; copies (n.d.) of "Procedure In Appointment of Postmasters" & "Procedure In Appointment of Rural Mail Carriers;" 5 letters (May-June 1959) from John M. Jeffrey (Jeffery & Sjogren, Attorneys at Law), Congressman Wilson & Hyde Gillette (Asst. Postmaster General) re/ constituent complaints about "junk mail" and hopes that the separation being 1st and 3rd class mail will be equalized; copies of two letters (7/17/59) from Charles E. Puskar (National Ass. of Postmasters of the United States) to The Editor, Newsweek re/ "the libelous insult to the 34,000 postmasters . . . which you published in your July 21 issue, it is only fair that you print the attached letter in answer to your article;" copies (7/30/59) of Air Mail & Surface Letter Mail Schedules from Washington, D.C. to Principal Cities in the U. S.; other issues in letters contained in this folder are: Wilson's interest in international mail handling for San Diego; constituent compliant about bulk mail; question about "availability of funds for maintaining the Customs Buildings at Andrade, California;" constituent complaint about the "high customs duty assessed on a parcel he mailed to Argentina;" constituent (United Postage Service & others) concerns about the Post Office establishing vending machines in competition with private businesses; Wilson & constituent complaint about "free postage."
