Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, statements and other items. Examples are: a letter (3/14/60) Postmaster General Arthur Summerfield & attached copy of a political statement and a "Summary of Proposed Postal Rate Increases" re/ concerns over national debt and postal deficit contributing to this; 2 letters (7/20 & 7/21/60) from John Lepman (The Mailing House) re/ personal congratulation to Wilson and "we will appreciate anything you can do to initiate the re establishment of a realistic operating policy in the Post Office department," that is, go back to the 2 cents rate from the current rate of 2 ½ cent rate; a Speed Mail copy from Postmaster General Summerfield to Wilson (11/1/60) re/ "Speed Mail became a new word of action in our national postal history today;" a stapled packet of corresp. (Mar.-Apr. 1960) from The Durland Mail Bringers, Wilson, A.C. Hahn (Dep. Asst. Postmaster General), Charles H. Forward (Law Offices of Luce, Forward, Hamilton & Scripps, Law) & George M. Moore (Asst. Postmaster General) re/ Star Route mail contractors, the Durlands, "are about to 'go broke' due . . . to the failure of the Post Office Department to give them relief under their contact to carry the star route mails;" letters (Nov. 1959-Apr. 1960) from Margaret M. Young (Secretary to Congressman Wilson), Herbert B. Warburton (General Counsel, Post Office Dept.), Leon W. Parma (Admin. Asst. to Wilson), & Sterling Selz (Special Agent, The Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co.) re/ the publication of a book by Mrs. Lucie Collier, The Truth About the American Negro that was being investigated by Postal authorities: a letter (5/31/60) from Postmaster General Summerfield to Members of Congress and enclosed 21 page copy of "A Statement By Postmaster General Arthur E. Summerfield In Response To An Advertisement Circulated By the Business Mail Foundation On May 25, 1960;" other letters in this folder cover issues such as: comments on program for mechanizing the postal service; comments on proposed regulations on the sealing of envelopes, cards and self-mailers; constituent complaint and follow up by Wilson and postal officials regarding the Buy-Rite Buyers Service of Hawthorne, New Jersey; & 2 letters (1/29/60 & 12/9/60) from Verne Scoggins (Regional Operations Dir., San Francisco) re/ address change, major regional staff positions & Mr. Scoggins "resigning from the position of Regional Operations Director" effective January 3, 1961.
