Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, newsletters, memos, DOD Fact Sheets, news clipping & other items. Examples are: letters (Mar. 1962) from Roger Hilsman (Dir. of Intelligence and Research, Dept. of State), his enclosed photocopy of "Vietnam Strategy Fortified Villages Are Key to Plan for Driving Reds From Rural Areas," The Wall Street Journal & Congressman Wilson's reply for more information; a small packet of corresp. and news clippings from The Los Angeles Times ( May-June 1962) re/ Hong Kong, refugees from Communist China & comments on Thailand; a student seeks Wilson's assistance in obtaining a pen pal through the State Dept.; a packet of corresp. (Jan. – May 1962) re/ constituent interest in having San Diego serve as a pilot program in bringing foreign university students to study here; letters (Mar. - Apr. 1962) from Coronado constituent Mrs. Barbara S. Goodfellow (with attached "clipping of a column by Edith Kermit Roosevelt, entitled "Defense Techniques of U.S. Given Reds," Congressman Wilson & Col. John J. Christy (Deputy Dir., Special Activities, Office of the Assist. Secretary of Defense) re/ sale of aircraft to Yugoslavia and the training of Yugoslavia personnel; a letter (24 May 1962) from Col. John J. Christy (Deputy Dir., Special Activities, Office of the Assist. Sec. of Defense) to Miss Margaret Young % Honorable Bob Wilson and enclosed "copies of our fact sheet 'concerning the sale of aircraft to Yugoslavia;'" letters & news clipping (Apr. – June 1962) from Coronado constituent Admiral Joseph W. Callahan (Ret.), Congressman Wilson & Frederick G. Dutton (Assist. Secretary of State) re/ State Dept. response to Adm. Callahan's fears that Tito was still too tied to the Soviet Union – Wilson had a similar conservative viewpoint; letters (Apr.-June) re/ Library of Congress & State Dept. help clear up misunderstanding from constituents regarding false fears about the alleged UNESCO treaty, the so called "Convention of Congress" regarding control of education; other topics of concern in this folder are: "the extension of fishing privileges to foreign-built vessels;" false fears of the "presence of Red Chinese troops on the Coast of Mexico;" concerns about the Panama Canal and the Connally Reservation; a constituent's complaint about prostitution in Tijuana, Mexico; constituent concerns that Reverend Ralph T. Henley's application for a Jordanian visa was rejected; & a packet of corresp. (Apr. – Aug. 1962) & a copy of Human Events (Vol. XVIII, No. 28, July 14, 1961) re/ criticism of Owen Lattimore, & other conservative fears about current U.S. foreign policy.
