Scope and Contents

A large collection of letters, telegrams, news clippings, office notes, memos, memorandum & news releases. Examples are: letters (Sept.-Oct. 1954) from La Jolla constituent James D. Parker, Jr. (U.S.N.R. Ret.), Congressman Wilson, Major General R.H. Ridgely, Jr. (Dir. of Personnel, HQ, USMC) & E.F.Terrar, Jr. (Wilson's Admin. Asst.) re/ politics & the sale of packaged liquor at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot; a letter (9 May 1956) from Adm. Felix B. Stump (Commander in Chief Pacific) to Congressman Wilson re/ "the recent tragedy at Parris Island" and interviews of enlisted personnel by a Honolulu paper; a letter (10 Jan. 56) from General R. McC. Pate (Commandant, USMC) to Wilson re/ thanking Wilson for his support of the Corps; letters (Sept. 1956) from constituent Mrs. Frances Robinson (Koza-gun, Kanagawa-ken, Honshu, Japan), Major General Robert E. Hogaboom (Acting Asst. Commandant of the Marine Corps) & Congressman Wilson re/ problems concerning "financial assistance for the schooling of dependent children of certain Marine Corps personnel located in Japan . . . . in an area where [costs for] dependents are not authorized;" letters (Aug. – Nov. 1960) from A.J. Cooper (Sec. Calif. Highway Commission with enclosed CCH Resolution), Congressman Wilson, & Major General Chester R. Allen (Quartermaster General of the Marine Corps) re/ relocation of Marine Corps weapons training facilities from Camp Matthews to Camp Pendleton because of proposed freeway development; letters (Dec. 1960-Jan. 1961) from constituent James F. Murray (Mgr. Borrego Valley Associates), Congressman Wilson, Major General Marion L. Dawson (Commander, El Toro Air Station, USMC) & Major General S.S. Jack (HQ., Fleet Marine Force, Pacific, El Toro Air Station) re/ responses to incidents, one in December involving a transmission line accident and power loss and the other in January when a Marine Corps jet – "a low flying escapade," called a "Sand Blower" flight, that Borrego residents complained about - "two jets flew across our Valley at less than 100' in height" at 2 p.m. on January 10th; other topics and issues in this folder are: letters (Mar-Apr. 1961) re/ Devil Pups program; telegram and notes (2/62) re/ reception in San Diego for General and Mrs. Krulak; letters (Apr. 1962) & news clipping & photo, San Diego Union (4/6/62), re/ a constituent & WWI & WWII veteran complains about "the revived 'Drumming Out' of bad-conductdischarged Marines;" telegrams, letters & news clippings (Mar.-Apr. 1962) re/ constituent queries about why Marine Color Guard was forbidden to participate in an American Heritage Program in San Diego; letters (Apr.-May 1962) re/ surfer complaints about restrictions at Camp Pendleton beaches; letters (Nov.-Dec. 1962) re/ procurement of toys by Marine Corps Exchange at Camp Pendleton and San Diego; letters and notes (Aug. 1962) re/ failure of Mesa Vista Hospital's Community Mental Health Center to obtain Marine Corp Band to play at their dedication service because it was not a public facility; two letters (Sept. 1963) in support of "Brute Krulak for Commandant of the Marine Corps;" corresp. (Sept. 1963) re/ success for US. National Bank having Marine Band play at the bank's dedication ceremony because it was part of the Center City Development program & supported by the Chamber of Commerce; letters (Oct.-Nov. 1963) re/ vehicular traffic control on the Marine Corps Recruit Depot and "severity of these measures;" telegram and letters (June 1963) re/ a conspiracy theory alarmist fears Marine Corps helicopters in Georgia are transporting UN troops; letters (Nov.-Dec. 1963) re/ an assertion from Father Dollen "that divine services are forbidden during reserve training periods." The training order was misconstrued by Father Dollen; a Dec. 4, 1963 letter from a constituent to Congressman Lionel Van Deerlin re/ MCRD football teams playing local college teams and "dirty playing" by the Marines and their coaches; letters (Mar. 1964) re/ responses to a constituent's letter concerning the death of a recruit at MCRD; a letter (9/29/65) re/ dollar contribution of the Communications and Electronic School at MCRD to San Diego and a question of why it was being transferred to Palm Springs & a response in "Memorandum For the Record" (6 Oct 1965); letter, note and news release (Dec. 1965) re/ transfer of Field Music School at MCRD, San Diego to MCRD Parris Island to save $11,676; letter and newspaper (Chevron, Vol. 23, No. 20, May 21, 1965) re/ photo display of San Diego's 16th Annual Armed Forces Day Parade; a letter (4/15/65) re/ pending reorganization of the Marine Corps Supply System; and a letter (6 April 1966) re/ Quantico Marine Officers Wives appreciate House Gallery passes from Congressman Wilson
