A collection of letters, news clippings, memorandum & telegrams. Examples are: A packet of letters (July-Aug. 1956) from H. Bailey Gallison (Executive Mgr., La Jolla Town Council, Inc.), Congressman Wilson, E.F. Terrar, Jr. (Wilson's Admin. Asst.), Sibley Sellew (Chairman of the Bd., La Jolla Town Council) & Lt. General V.E. Megee (Asst. Commandant, USMC) re/ opposition by the Town Council to any expansion of Camp Matthews Rifle Range with permanent buildings; letters (Oct.1956-Jan. 1957) from Andrew Andeck (Chairman, Camp Matthews Committee, La Jolla Town Council), H. Bailey Gallison (La Jolla Town Council) & Wilson re/ extensive commentary as to why the Matthews site should be relocated from La Jolla; a Jan. 28. 1957 letter from Congressman Wilson to the Honorable Carl Vinson (Chairman, Armed Services Committee) re/ suggesting a study of the impacts of the Camp Matthews Rifle Range on the surrounding population; a Jan. 31, 1957 letter from Chairman Carl Vinson to RAdm. E. C. Stephan (Dir. Office of Legislative Liaison, Dept. of the Navy) re/ "Mr. Wilson says that location of the camp constitutes a serious problem, both to the Marine Corps and the surrounding community;" a letter (1/29/57) from National City constituent Dr. Minoru Kojima & Wilson's reply (2/4/57) re/ Dr. Kojima's plea for West Coast Rifle Club continued use of the rifle range at Camp Matthews. Civilians had been using the site for 30 years; letters (2/57) from Andrew Andeck (La Jolla Town Council), Roscoe Arnett (Pacific Beach Town Council), Wilson & Chairman Carl Vinson re/ resolutions from these councils to relocate Camp Matthews outside of the San Diego City limits; 3 letters (Feb.-Mar. 1957) & news clippings re/ withholding future construction at Matthews, status of rifle range up in the air & commentary about things getting out of hand on this issue; letters & memorandum for the remainder of 1957 continue this theme of opposing new construction and relocating the firing range outside of S.D. city limits – possibly to Camp Pendleton; a packet of letters & telegrams (1958-1959) re/ constituent concerns about 6 a.m . firing at Matthews and extensive commentary from the Commanding General at MCRD; a letter (4/10/59) from Col. C. T. Newton (Corps Of Engineers) & Wilson's reply (4/16/59) re/ "a combined study of survey scope of Camp Pendleton, with a view to shore protection, and Agua Hedionda Lagoon Harbors;" other materials in this folder are: 1959 letter from Senator Kuchel re/ UC interest in obtaining Camp Matthews; (1959-1960) corresp. re/ relocating Highway 101 through Camp Matthews area; letters (1960) re/ UC and San Diego City interest in a campus in La Jolla; San Diego County Bd. of Supervisors' Resolutions (3/28/60) as to relocation of Camp Matthews & expansion of 101; news clipping (3/24/60) re/ "Carlos Tavares Offers City San Clemente [canyon] Land in Swap" which would allow the developer to consolidate his lands south of Camp Matthews; a Mar. 11, 1960 letter from Brig. General P.W. John (Acting Quartermaster General, USMC) re/ developing plans for a new Rifle Range facility at Camp Pendleton; letters (Jan.-Feb. 1960) from La Jolla constituent John E. Hughes & Wilson re/ Mr. Hughes' criticisms of General Pate's reasons why a transfer of firing from morning to afternoon can't be achieved & Wilson's indication that plans were underway to move the firing range; letters (July & Aug, 1961) re/ prospects for $6.1 million appropriation to build firing range facilities at Pendleton & a new 101 route through Camp Matthews; news clippings (3/61) re/ UC and 101 changes as applied to Camp Matthews; a letter (1/30/62) from the San Diego Highway Development Assn., Inc. & Wilson's reply (3/12/62) re/ "the Navy has requested the last increment to effect the complete removal of these [Matthews] facilities to Camp Pendleton.
