Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, memorandum, news clippings, news letters & other items. These are not filed chronologically. Examples are: a letter (1/29/53) from RAdm. Thomas S. Combs (Chief of the Bureau of Aeronautics) to Congressman Wilson re/ reduction in force for the Naval Air Station, San Diego; letters (Mar.-Apr. 1953) National City constituent Marion L. Wilson, Edward Terrar (Wilson's Admin. Asst) & Congressman Wilson re/ a concern that Long Beach was trying to have the 11th Naval District moved to that city; a letter (5/20/53) from Harry E. Wade (Executive Secretary, Independent Business Men's Assn. of Long Beach), Wilson's reply (5/29/53) & attached copy of the Assn.'s brochure re/ desire for fair treatment for Long Beach shipyards; a news clipping from the Evening Tribune, "Stabilize Civil Payroll in S.D., Plea of Navy (7/29/53); a letter (9/24/53) from Harry W. Evans, Jr. (Industrial Dept., San Diego Chamber of Commerce) & a "Survey Concerning Volume of Private Business With Local Naval Installations" with responses as of 9/30/53; letters (Aug.-Oct. 1953) from E. F. Terrar, Jr. (Wilson's Admin. Asst.) & RAdm. W. L. Rees (Asst. Chief of Naval Operations – Air) re/ rejection of Pacific Southwest Airlines' request to use the Naval Air Station, North Island in times of low visibility; a letter (11/16/53) from La Jolla constituent A. C. Barlow & Wilson's reply (11/25/53) re/ "The Naval Station has been stablilized at 3,000;" a copy of Congressman Wilson, "As a part of my responsibility of 'learning the ropes' as a new Congressman, I was privileged last December to make a complete tour of every Naval installation in the San Diego area." He also indicate in this message he "had the good fortune to become the first San Diego Congressman to gain a place on the vital Armed Services Committee of the House of Representatives;" a letter (7/24/53) from E. O. Arnold (Special Representative, Employees Assn., U. S. Naval Station) to Wilson providing "additional information which it is hoped will be of assistance in connection with your efforts to secure equitable allocation of manpower at the Naval Station, San Diego;" other topics and issues in this folder are: an unsigned & undated letter to Wilson complaining about the misuse of government property at Camp Elliot; a Resolution from the American Legion recommending that the reduction for the Naval Station be postponed; many letters showing concern about reduction in ship repair personnel at the Naval Station; concern for improving the external appearance of the Naval Station; listings of civilian personal employed at the Naval Station; complaints from Coronado grocers regarding lost of business to commissaries; important memorandum from Craig Hosmer re/ Independent Businessmen's Assn. of Long Beach and designating Long Beach as "Home Port" for naval vessels; "Contracting automotive repair work to private garages in the City of San Diego;" copies of The Commentator (Official Publication Employees Assn., Naval Station); a list of Naval Flag officers of the 11th Naval District; complaints (Aug. '53) from 12 property owners (5125 acres) "immediately South of the Miramar Naval Jet Base, desire to record our protest of the carrier landing practice as it is now being practiced & letters (Dec. '53) re/ constituent concerns about medical care for dependents of military personnel being cut
