Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, news clippings, notes, memorandum & other items. These are not filed chronologically. Examples are: letters (Mar.-Apr. 1955) from Congressmen John Phillips & Bob Wilson & Admiral Robert B. Carney (Office of the Chief of Naval Operations) re/ Mr. Phillips' concerns over errors in judgment which led to the sinking of the destroyer Hobson when it collided with the USS Wasp; letters (Oct.-Nov. 1955) from Charles C. Gilbert (Sec.-Trea. Local No. 481 & Cmd. W. G. Thatcher (Asst. Head, Discipline Section, Bureau of Personnel) re/ complaint about "part-time civilian employment of naval personnel by the ABC Cab company in San Diego; a letter (6/30/55) from RAdm. B.E. Moore (Office of the CNO) to Wilson re/ Ream Field will be commissioned as a Naval Auxiliary Air Station on 1 July 1955;" letters (11/2 & 11/10/55) from RAdm. James S. Russell (Chief of the Bureau of Aeronautics) & RAdm. R. J. Arnold (Chief of the Bureau of Supplies and Accounts) to Wilson re/ guide lines for the reduction of naval personnel for 1956-1957 at NAS North Island, the Supply Depot, the Commissary and the accounts offices in the 30th Congressional District; seven constituent letters and attached news clippings (Jan. 1955) & Wilson's replies (Feb. 1955) re/ the long hours and shortage of help available at the Naval Hospital in San Diego for seriously ill patients; a packet of letters (Dec. 1954-Jan. 1955) re/ the relocating of naval ships from San Diego to Long Beach; a large stapled packet of letters and news clipping (June-Aug.1955) related to the controversy between the City, property owner-developers and the Navy regarding the use of land contiguous with the Miramar Naval Air Station's field carrier landing practice and air navigational flight patterns; a copy of "Recent Trends in the Business-Cycle Policy of Government From an Address by Arthur F. Burns, Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers June 16, 1955" (3 pp.); Wilson's letter (12/28/55) to Captain Roy L. Johnson (Commanding Officer, USS Forrestal thanking him "forwarding to me a picture of the U.S.S. FORRESTAL as well as the commissioning brochure" (1 October 1955) & Dept. of the Navy, Bureau of Yards and Docks "Quarterly Report for Period 1 October 1955 To 31 December 1955 re/ real estate involving consideration between $5,000 and $25,000.
