Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, telegrams, memos, memorandum & telephone messages. These are not filed chronologically. Examples are: "Telephone Conversation Record . . . June 10, 1958" from Cmdr. Newbold re/ USS Hornet "will chg home port from SD to Long Beach" & "reclassified from CVA (attack) to CVS (Submarine anti) on June 27, 1958;" a large packet of corresp. (July-Sept. 1958) re/ alleged discrimination in living conditions for enlisted personnel and their dependents at Sangley Point, Philippine Islands; Wilson letter (6/6/58) to Assist. Secretary of the Navy Sinclair Armstrong re/ Lemoor complex at Moffett Field, commencement address at SDSC and other personal matters; letters (July 1956- Dec. 1957) & news clipping (San Diego Union, 11/13/57) re/ a proposal to use "submerged or floating platforms scattered in the seas as nuclear rocket bases;" a copy of H. Con. Res. 286 (3/6/56 re/ acceleration of military construction to help reduce unemployment; letter (4/21/58) from Congressman Wilson to the Secretary of the Navy Thomas S. Gates, Jr. & attached copy of "Agenda For Meeting With Representative Bob Wilson" Naval Civilian Employee Assn. Coordinating Council, San Diego Area; other topics and issues in this folder are: letters (Feb.-Mar.) re/ Calif. Beverage Retailers Assn. & Navy as to sale of package alcoholic beverages at military installations in the San Diego area; DOD, Office of Public Information News Release (4/14/58) re/ "48 Ships To Be Inactivated During Fiscal Year 1959:" letters (Feb.-Mar. 1958 re/ Wilson's suggestion to Sec. Gates of "an around the world cruise by the Forrestal with modern aircraft, Nautilus, guided missile cruisers and other late model ships as a modern version of 'The Great White Fleet,' has been received and is much appreciated;" letters (Nov.-Dec. 1958) regarding a constituent's suggestion "relative to the numbering of buildings at shore establishments;" news clipping (6/11/58) re/ USS Hornet transferred to Long Beach & Wilson's efforts to obtain a 1,200-foot wharf in San Diego was blocked in the House; 2 letters (Sept. 1958) from Wilson & VAdm. Tisdale re/ a tough election year and retention of communication school at Imperial Beach; letters (Aug.-Dec. 1958) re/ a Lakeside constituent's "complaint of annoyance from aircraft operations at the U. S. Naval Air Station, Miramar;" a 7 Jan. 1958 letter from RAdm. John S. McCain to Wilson extending the Secretary of Navy's "wishes for your continued success during your service in the 86th Congress. . . ." copies of Dept. of the Navy Request for Authorization contained in the Department of Defense Military Constructionj Authorization Bill for Fiscal Year 1958 at: NAS Miramar, NAS North Island, NAF South San Diego Bay, MCRD, NTC and NCS.
