Scope and Contents
A large collection of letters, memorandum, news clippings, proposals, maps and other items. Examples are: a letter (1/19/60) from Capt. P.B. Haines, Jr. (Asst. Deputy Chief of Legislative Affairs, Office of the Secretary of the Navy) to Chairman Carl Vinson (Committee on Armed Services) and a letter (1/21/60) from Philip W. Kelleher (Counsel, Committee on Armed Services) to Congressman Wilson re/ "the recent decisions concerning the disestablishment of the U.S. Naval Retraining Command, Camp Elliott. . . . to be completed by 30 September 1960;" a letter (1/19/60) from Capt. P. B. Haines (Dept. of the Navy) & attached 3 page Fact Sheet on Camp Elliott; a letter (1/20/60) from constituent Miss Luna M. Handley & Wilson's reply (1/26/60) re/ her concern about property lost with the recent Navy action at Camp Elliott; letters (July & Sept. 1959) from RAdm. C. C. Hartman (Commandant, Eleventh Naval District) & Congressman Wilson re/ Master Plan for San Diego and "the release of a portion of Camp Elliott and the Communications Training Center at Imperial Beach;" letters (JuneAug. 1960) from constituent Keith E. Hatter, Congressman Wilson & Franklin Floete (Administrator, General Services Admin.) re/ government-owned property at Camp Elliott and local school board interest; Memorandum For File (10/13/60) re/ Asst. Sec. Defense reported "transfer of 3100 acres of land at Camp Elliott from the Navy to the Air Force for one reason - - to protect noise from further testing in Atlas 2 [Project] Orion;" a copy of Dept. of the Navy, Bureau of Yards and Docks, "Disposal Project No. 247" with details on "Portion of Naval Retraining Command, Camp Elliott;" a copy of Dept. of the Air Force "Real Estate Acquisition Project No. 7" re/ 3100 acres of unimproved land to the Air Force (est. cost of land $40,300), 4300 acres to the west had been transferred already; letters (Nov. 1960-Mar. 1961) from constituent Major Reuben H.
