Scope and Contents

A large collection of letters, news clippings, postal cards and other items. These are not filed chronologically. Examples are: a letter (11/23/53) from constituent James G. Bolton, Jr., his enclosed Bulletin from the Fleet Reserve Assn., "Save Your Commissary Store" & a reply (12/9/53) from E. F. Terrar, Jr. (Wilson's Admin. Asst.) re/ Mr. Terrar's refutation of the Grocer's Association's claim that Wilson supported closing the commissaries; letters (10/53) from James Bolton, Jr. & E.F. Terrar, Jr. re/ topic of closing of commissaries and pay cuts or pay raises for the Navy?; a letter (12/18/53) from James G. Bolton, Jr. & his attached copy of Mr. Harrington's address to acquaint "Shipmates, ladies, gentlemen of the press, and guests" with the Fleet Reserve Association (13 pages); a letter (11/18/53) from La Mesa constituent Mrs. Helen Henshaw & E. F. Terrar's reply (11.24/53) re/ issue of closing commissaries & pay raises for congressmen; a letter (11/6/53) from San Diego constituent Mrs. Frieda E. Nickerson & E.F. Terrar's reply (11/16/53) re/ commissary closings in San Diego by December;" letters (6/29 & 7/9/53) from two constituents requesting information "holding hearings on the question of continuing the U. S. Navy Commissary Stores in the 11th Naval District;" a letter (12/8/53) from Coronado constituent Arthur A. Poindexter & Congressman Wilson's reply (12/16/53) re/ "curtailment of so-called fringe benefits for Armed Services" & refutation that commissaries in San Diego would be closed; news clipping (n.d., n.s.) re/ "Wilson Urges State's Grocers To Back Military Pay Raise;" a letter (12/14/53) from D. D. Smith (VW-1, Honolulu) & Wilson reply (12/28/53) re/ "anti-Commissaries Rider to the Defense Appropriation Act" – Wilson indicated "No commissaries are to be closed in the Honolulu area;" other issues and topics in this folder are: an extensive number of letters and news clippings from constituents addressing the issue of commissary closing by the Defense Department, hearings on the subject, the lobbying of the Grocers' Assn. & responses from Wilson & his staff on these subjects; pages 89 & 90 from U.S. News & World Report re/ "Special Report 'Creeping Socialism' – It's Hard to Shake Off;" a letter from W. L. Ellis (Chief of Investigations, General Accounting Office) & enclosed copy of "Summary and Recapitulation of Investigating Survey Findings Related to the Need and Justification for Commissary Sales Stores Operated By the Military Departments at 52 Installations in the Continental United States;" and a 2 page synopsis by "john a. Hannah, ass't defense secy., signed" showing the "following criteria shall be applicable to the determination required . . . with respect to the continuation or disestablishment of commissary stores . . . ."
