Scope and Contents

A large collection of letters, news clippings, official Navy statements, memos, & telegrams. These are not filed chronologically. Examples are: News clipping from the San Diego Union (12/24/57) re/ "Navy To Lift Fund Freeze By Spring. Rep. Wilson Gets Assurance on Area Construction;" Memorandum (8/8/57) from the Office of Legislative Liaison, Dept. of the Navy re/ "attached questions and answers concerning the active U. S. Fleet;" a packet of corrsp. (June 1956-Jan. 1957) from George Bissell (Mgr., Union Fish Company), National Fish Institute, Congressman Wilson & RAdm. R. J. Arnold (Chief, Bureau of Supplies and Accounts) re/ problem with contracts for delivery of sea-food to all U. S. Naval activities in S.D. area and excess paper work; a letter (8/14/57) from F. A. Bantz (Asst. Secretary of the Navy (Material) & attached "Bureau of Yards and Docks enclosure for The Honorable Bob Wilson" re/ proposed reduction in civilian employees at Naval Station, Naval Supply Depot, NAS North Island, NAS Miramar & NAAS, Brown Field. According to Bantz's letter, approximately 18,000 would be separated from Navy Department employment over the remainder of the current fiscal year. "The high cost of new and complicated weapons systems and the necessity of operating with in an expenditure limitation of $10.4 billion for Fiscal Year 1958 have made these actions necessary;" a large packet of corresp (Aug.-Nov. 1957) re/ extensive commentaries on the issue of filling a Supervisory Automotive Transportation Specialist position at the Public Works Transportation Center, 11th Naval District and concerns about this from the National Assoc. of Supervisors, Dept. of Defense; letters & telegram (Jan.-Feb. 1958) from Wilson and RAdm. C. C. Hartman (Commandant, 11th Naval District) re/ extensive commentary from Admiral Hartman on border issues & Naval personnel in Tijuana. "Of the estimated 300,000 crossing into Mexico from San Diego area each year by Navy and Marine personnel both in uniform and civilian clothes, only about 1000 are booked by local authorities." He did not favor closing the border to service personnel; additional topics and issues in this folder are: (4/58) "progress of the school building for the Amphibious Base;" (4/58) news clipping & note of "Welcome aboard" from Wilson to RAdm. Smedberg, III; office notes (6/58) re/ Public Works as approved by House Armed Services since 1953; letter (6/26/58) from Wilson to Adm. Hartman re/ Capehart Units in S. D. & other information; photocopy of list of Public Works improvements on Navy and Marine Corps installations in San Diego County for fiscal years 1953 through 1958; packet of corresp.(Jan.-June 1958) re/ building suitable quarters in San Diego for the Commandant of the 11th Naval District; telegram (7/29/58) from Wilson to Hartman re/ need information on "results of Navy dive search of submarine hulk discovery off Imperial Beach;" letter, telegram and news clipping (12/58) re/ praise for Adm. Hartman.
