Examples are: Office note (n.d.) re/ "Navy Electronics Laboratory Basic research – not production" & brief listing of numbers of Mechanical engineers in Oct. and today; letters (4/11 & 4/12/56) from Congressman Wilson & attached copy of News Release (4/3/56) re/ "Faced with an urgent need for an estimated 8,700 professional engineers and certain categories of physical scientists in the next 12 months, the Civil Service Commission today raised starting salaries for these jobs for the third time in approximately a year;" letters (3/56) & attached copy of "Resolution adopted by the Interdepartmental Committee on Scientific Research and Development" re/ recommending more adequate compensation and benefits for scientists and professional engineers in Federal Service; a large packet of letters (Apr. & May 1956) from DoD, Wilson, constituents and others re/ topic of adequate compensation for engineering and scientific personnel; a letter (6/17/56 from La Mesa constituent Harold E. Bryan, Wilson's reply (6/21/56) & attached copy of "It Isn't Healthy," Electrical Manufacturing (June 1956, p. 83) re/ drain on public employment caused by inflated pay from private sector; letters (6/56) from La Mesa constituent John Hughs & Wilson re/ problem of retention of highly trained and skilled personnel in Air Force and other military services, especially for the Air Force in terms of housing facilities; letters (8/1/56) from Wilson in respond to queries from business leaders in San Diego re/ availability of scientific and engineering manpower; a letter (8/1/56) from Edward F. Terrar, Jr. (Admin. Asst. to Wilson) & reply (8/21/56) from Les Geheres (Ryan Aeronautical Co,) re/ copies of the report on the Joint Committee on Atomic Energy and the shortage of personnel; a letter (9/13/56) from Weldon G. Lilly (Secretary, Assn. Senior Professional Engineers, Norfolk, Naval Shipyard) & Wilson reply (9/17/56) re/ "critical shortage of scientists and engineers . . . in the Federal Service. This shortage is due largely to the vast difference in the pay between government and industry."
