A large collection of letters, notes, memorandum, periodical articles & government reports. Examples are: A letter (5/14/57) from P. A. Carlson & T. A. Parker (CA Society of Professional Engrs.) & Wilson's reply (5/23/57) re/ "professional engineers are deserving of Federal recognition as professionals" and support for H.R. 2803 and 2804; a letter (n.d.) from La Mesa Helix High student Schelleen Cox and Wilson's reply (1/5/57) requesting Wilson's opinion on "why Russia has pulled ahead of us . . . .?"; a letter (2/1/57) from San Diego constituent Robert J. Steelman , a news clipping & Wilson's reply (2/8/57) re/ "Private Industry's Greener Pastures" and salary inequities for professional employees in Government service; a letter (2/7/57) from La Mesa constituent H. E. Bryan, a news clipping and Wilson's reply (2/14/57) re/ inadequate pay for those in Civil Service; a packet of corresp. (Mar.-June 1957) from Wilson, a number of physicists & engineers at the Naval Electronics Lab & Wilton B. Persons (The Deputy Asst. to the President) re/ responses to these employees' concern about the advisability of continuing work for the Government as scientists and engineers; letters (Mar.-Apr. 1957) from constituents, Congressman Murray, & enclosed excerpts from Proceedings of the IRE & Electrical Engineering re/ "Job Opinions of Engineering Seniors" & "advisability of continuing to work for the Government as scientists and engineers;" letters (Apr.-May 1957) from Wilson, constituents, Deputy Asst. Secretary of Defense Stephen S. Jackson, John W. Macy, Jr. (Executive Dir., U.S. Civil Service Commission) & press release (5/6/57) from the Honorable Tom Murray, Chairman, Committee on Post Office and Civil Service re/ "the problem of adequate remuneration for scientific personnel" employed by the government; stapled packet containing 2 letters (Apr. & May 1957) & enclosed copies of Dr. John M. Ide, "The Pay Problem in the Navy Laboratories," a letter (3/18/57) to the Asst. Sec. of the Navy signed by members of the Senior Scientists Council Navy Laboratories, Dr. Ide, "Supplementary Statement – The Cost Factors" & excerpt from Chemical and Engineering News – "Federal Labs Lose Out In Scientific Manpower Race; Big Factor Is Pay;" other letters & news clippings in this folder for 1957 continue to address this topic and were not encouraging as to pay revisions. Items for 1958 are: letters (Jan.-Feb.) re/ a proposal to the Dept. of the Navy suggesting the "feasibility of establishing an experimental high school at the Naval Electronics Laboratory" by John M. Stroud, called a "Junior Academy of Science;" letters (June) re/ adjustment of work forces at NEL and replacement of sub-professional personnel with professional ones; letters (May-July) re/ reactions to the lay offs of 29 people at NEL & the hiring of graduate students; a letter (7/7/58) from RAdm. L. V. Honsinger (Acting Chief of BuShips) & attached copy of "Navy Centers Patent Office at Electronics Lab," Evening Tribune, 7/21/58.
