Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, government documents, news clippings, reports, telegrams & other items. Examples are: copy of a letter (12/28/58) from Robert J. Perry (Calif. Dist. Commander, Submarine Veterans, WWII) to Sec. of the Navy Thomas Gates, Jr. re/ an objection to the proposed change of the "assignment of names, other than that of fishes, being assigned to submarines, namely Abraham Lincoln and Robert E. Lee. Not one person in well over 150 in which I contacted were favorable toward the new names;" a letter (1/9/59) from Capt. F. Kent (ret. -Asst. Dir., Naval History, Office of the CNO) re/ an explanation for the renaming policy for nuclear submarines; letters (1/60) from Wilson, Capt. H. P. Lanham (Executive Asst. & Senior Aide to the CNO) & Adm. Arleigh Burke (CNO) re/ explanation for name change stressing "the free world's 'power for peace' against the threat of communist aggression. . . . The traditional policy of naming submarines for fish and denizens of the deep is reserved for the conventional nuclear submarines;" letters (12/58-2/59) from Charles E. Porter (Military Affairs Dept. S.D. Chamber of Commerce), Capt. H. P. Lanham (Ex. Asst. & Senior Aide to CNO), Adm. Arleigh Burke (CNO) & Wilson re/ plans for providing a shore base for submarines in San Diego. It "is ideally suited for shore facilities;" a letter (3/2/59) from San Diego constituent Elbert S. Purcell & Wilson's reply (3/9/58) re/ Mr. Purcell's suggestions about improving fire power for ships by using small atomic rockets; a telegram (7/20/59) from Wilson and attached news clippings re/ VAdm. Lockwood & editorial – "Submarine Pier Vital Keep Peace with Atomic Navy;" other topics and issues in this folder are: letters & telegram (Mar. & July 1959) re/ Navy League, Chamber of Commerce & Pat Brown's Commission for Ship Building on West Coast support for submarine piers in San Diego Bay & shipyard construction; postal card, office note and news clipping (Feb., Mar. & May, 1960) re/ support for more nuclear subs, and S.D. Sub Pier; small packet of corresp., news clipping and copy of H.R. 12260 (May-June 1960) re/ "urging submarine incentive pay for those serving on undersea research vessels as amendment to H. R. 10500;" constituent letters (7/60) supporting incentive pay; a copy of "Statement By Congressman Bob Wilson Need For Nuclear Submarine Pier At San Diego, California" (5/31/60) & attached copy of Dept. of Navy, FY 61 Military Construction Fund Program (14 May 1960) for Submarine Pier in San Diego – budget request = $1,700,000; a copy of "Some Aspects of Deep Submergence Technology" by Lt. Don Walsh (U.S. Navy Electronics Laboratory, S.D.) – 11/21/60 (12 pp.); additional letters and news clippings (1960) re/ nuclear submarine pier in San Diego; letters (5/60) from Capt. Edward L. Beach (USS TRITON, (SSR(N) 586) & Wilson re/ "personal memento of the first submerged circumnavigation of the world;" letters (Dec. 1960-Feb. 1961) re/ inquiry "concerning official recognition of individuals who initiated the concept for nuclear reactor power plants;" letter (5/17/61) re/ Project Mohole; letter (8/28/61) & copy of new release (9/5/61) re/ award of $1,608,000 construction contract for Nuclear Submarine Pier, Naval Station, San Diego to M.H. Golden Construction; and eighth grade constituent letter and official responses (Oct.-Nov. 1961) re/ her concern about "toy models of nuclear submarines" giving the enemy advice.
