Scope and Contents

A large collection of letters, telegrams, government bulletins, pamphlets, news clippings, memorandum, news releases and other items. Some of these are not filed chronologically. Examples are: a letter (1/21/53) from Mary Louise Ramsey (American Law Section, Library of Congress) to Wilson re/ his telephone request "for information concerning the legal precedent for giving owners of farm land which was taken during the war for military use, the first opportunity to repurchase the land when it became surplus;" letters (6/55) from Darwin S. Haley (Big Ace Markets), Congressman Wilson & Commissioner Charles E. Slusser (Public Housing Admin.) re/ purchase of commercial properties located in Linda Vista project; Memo For File (6/1/55) re/ "Dr. Dill, owner of American Hospital in Manila – also owner of 'Health Service Corporation' . . . discussed with Bob the possibility of his leasing the Philippine Scout Hospital at Fort McKinley, Manila;" 2 telegrams and office note (11/55) re/ La Jolla constituent Helen Alvarez inquiry about North Island cement plant; letters (Feb.-Mar. 1955) from Jack Hardy (Executive Dir., San Diego County Heart Assn.), Congressman Wilson & RAdm. R. J. Arnold (Chief of Bureau of Supplies and Accounts) re/ a request for "information about acquiring surplus Navy materials for the . . . Heart Association;" other examples are: letters (Jan.-May 1957) Fletcher Hills Elementary School desire to obtain salvage aircraft for community park; Jamul constituent interest in surplus jeep for school district; letter (11/57) re/ Monty Kingsbury Midway Motors interest in used trailers; letters (Dec. 1957-Jan. 1958) re/ Don Diego Realty purchasing surplus military gear; letters (Dec. 1958-Mar. 1959) re/ Ramona Municipal Water District buying surplus pipe; an American Legion Memorandum to all members of the Senate and House (3/12/59) re/ Army surplus uniforms; constituent interest in surplus Army tractor (5/59); a large packet of corresp. (1953-1959) re/ Boys and Girls Club interest in government surplus land in Linda Vista; letters (6/59) re/ " the San Diego Home for Blind's interest in surplus federal property;" a June 1959 brochure "How to Acquire Federal Surplus Property for Health, Educational, and Civil Defense Purposes;" copies of "Instruction Sheet for Purchasing Navy Surplus Property" & a "List of Navy Selling Activities;" additional organizations and groups interested in surplus property in 1959 are: AAUW; the Community Methodist Chapel of the Hills in Descanso; Boy Scout Troop 326; Ocean Garden Products; El Cajon constituent Sybil C. Campbell; Sea Explorer Ship #49; items for 1960 are: South Bay YMCA; Claremont High School; City of San Diego; Gyrotor Company; Chula Vista constituent Wellington J. Cole; San Diego County; San Diego City and County YMCA; volunteer fire department in El Cajon; a future voter's interest in surplus parachutes; R.M. Pyles Boys Camp (political commentary from G. Ray Arnett of Bakersfield); items for 1961 are: a GSA pamphlet, "Surplus Government Personal Property Sales Information;" surplus purchases for American Tunaboat Assn., sale of govt. paint; news items on Chinese Clinic in San Diego, San Diego City Resolution No. 163811 (1/10/61); and constituent interest in surplus drums and bugles; items for 1962 are: a packet of Dept. of Commerce material regarding "May 2 Proposed Revision of Foreign Excess Property Order #1;" reprints from Federal Register for this material from 1959-1960; a GSA pamphlet – "Donation of Federal Surplus Property" (2/62, 18 pp.); copy of Dept. of Commerce news release for 6/22/62 – "Foreign Excess Property Order No. 1 Revision is Announced" and "Title 44 – Public Property and Works – Chapter IV, Part 401 – Foreign Excess Property" – Reprinted From the Federal Register of June 23, 1962, 6 pp.; constituent letters (Feb.- Sept., 1962) regarding "purchase of surplus property by civilian employees of the Government;" interest in purchasing surplus parachutes for skydiving; Frank W. Sloan (Electric Motors & Repairs) and bidding difficulties with purchasing surplus Navy property; Wilson's assistance to Captain Diego Xavier (Tuna Clipper) in attempting to purchase Edo Amphibious floats for his Boeing L-15 "Scout" plane; industry-wide complaints against importation of government construction equipment from overseas for domestic sale & an El Cajon constituent's interest in obtaining a surplus military helicopter for there local CAP squadron re/ reference to plane crash in Big Bear and local need for a helicopter.
