Scope and Contents
A large collection of letters, postal cards, telegrams and news clippings which address the issue of creating a Department of Urban Affairs. Examples are: National Republican Congressional Committee News Release for Feb. 20, 1962 from Chairman Bob Wilson re/ comments on appointing Dr. Robert Weaver to fill the Secretary of HEW position & avoid the issue of race in the creation of a Dept. of Urban Affairs; an 8 page letter (2/16/62) from Laurance G. Henderson (Executive Vice President, National Housing Conference, Inc.) re/ commentary on the creation of "a new department of Urban Affairs and Housing;" approximately 100 letters, telegrams and postal cards (largely from constituents) expressing rejection of the Kennedy's administration's proposal to a Department of Urban Affairs & Wilson's replies indicating his opposition to the proposal and the overwhelmingly vote of rejection in the House on January 21; this folder contains only one telegram and two letters from constituents urging Wilson to support the President's reorganization Plan No. 1 to create a cabinet level department of Housing and Urban Affairs.
