Scope and Contents

A large collection of letters, telegrams, statements, brochures, news clippings, newsletters & a House Armed Forces Committee reprint. These are not filed chronologically. Examples are: letters (5/63) from Lemon Grove constituent Mrs. Olivia Davis & attached copy of a Jan. 25, 1963 NRCC newsletter, "Issue of the Day" re/ a critique of the Bay of Pigs fiasco, which Mrs. Davis points out, Kennedy inherited; (1/25/63) letters (3/63) from Congressman Wilson, Brigadier General C. R. Roderick (USAF) & David E. McGiffert (Asst. to the Secretary, Legislative Affairs, Defense Dept.) re/ Wilson letter (including rough draft) to the Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara asking for more information on Soviet ships, Cuba and missiles be made public; a telegram (11/24/63) from constituent L. J. Ahern to Wilson demanding an "immediate elimination of all Cuban representation in our hemisphere;" a copy of U.S., H.E.W., "Financial Assistance to Needy Cuban Refugees (5/15/63) & a copy of H.E.W., "Cuban Refugees: A National Problem" (7/26/63); a letter (9/12/63) from Enrique Villareal (Sec. Relaciones Exteriores, Movimiento Democrata Christiano De Cuba) & Wilson's reply (9/25/63) re/ "Thank you for your kind words of moral support of my efforts to assist Cuban exiles in my limited way;" the "Statement of Ellen Winston Commissioner, Welfare Administration U.S, Department of Health, Education, and Welfare Before Subcommittee No.1 of the Committee on the Judiciary U.S. House of Representatives June 19, 1963" (20 pages); a copy of "Steps in the Resettlement of Cuban Refugees" – Cuban Refugee Center, H.E.W., Miami, FL; a constituent letter (10/10/63), Wilson's reply (10/17/63) & copies of Fact Sheets from the Cuban Refugee Center; a packet of letters & fact sheets (July-Aug., 1963) re/ information similar to those just cited; additional items in this folder are: letters (Feb., May & Aug.) from constituents & Wilson's responses re/ Cuban refugees, Administration policies and Republican opposition; Wilson's critical letter to Kennedy and State Dept. responses (6/63); a copy of a Committee Print re/ "Investigation of the Preparedness Program," S. Res. 75 (88th Cong., 1st Sess.) 18 pages; memorandum & photocopy (2/63) re/ Dr. Nicholas Gonzales de Mendoza who escaped from Cuba; a constituent letter (2/15/63) criticizing UN agricultural aid to Cuba & other policies; a NRCC "News Release" (2/8/63) featuring Wilson's critique of President Kennedy re/ 23 American in Cuban prisons;" news clippings (4/63) from Copley News Service and the Washington Post re/ Cuba and other adjacent areas; a copy of an NRCC "Newsletter" (4/19/63) featuring "Bay of Pigs – Two Years Later."
