Scope and Contents

A large collection of letters, telegrams, documents & resolutions. Examples are: copies of Congressional documents – Public Law 796 amending "the Act entitled 'An Act to expedite the provision of housing in connection with national defense . . . October 27, 1940'" (2 pp.) & "Approved June 28, 1948;" Public Law 171 – the "Housing Act of 1949" (36 pp.); Public Law 475 – the Housing Act of 1950" (38 pp.); Report No. 973, "Preference for Former Owners of Certain Dwellings Being Sold Under Lanham War Housing Act . . . July 27, 1953" (2 pp.) and 83rd Cong., 1 Sess., H.R. 6130, "An Act To permit a first preference for former owners of certain dwellings being sold under Lanham War Housing Act July 31, 1953" (2 pp.); a copy of The City of San Diego, "Resolution No. 108983" adopted 10/28/52 (4 pp.) re/ preserving bonding capacity for the city's costs related to Public Law 139; a letter (4/23/53) from San Diego Mayor John D. Butler to Congressman Wilson & attached copy of "Revised Listing of City of San Diego – Critical Deficiencies" showing costs and requested federal grants for streets, fire stations & water district re/ the mayor's frustrated appeal to Wilson for support for the proposed federal assistance to the city; a letter (5/7/53) from constituent Perry H. Jones (ENI, U.S. Naval Amphibious Base) & Wilson's reply 5/15/53) re/ complaints about the inadequate, "Cow Barn" housing Jones and his family were assigned to in Chula Vista; letters (June-Oct. 1953) from constituent Mrs. Carleton H. Humphreys, Congressman Wilson, Arthur B. Howell (Acting General Housing Mgr., PHA) & E. F. Terrar, Jr. (Wilson's Admin. Asst.) re/ Linda Vista Housing, need for more bedrooms, politics & personal commentary; a letter (n.d) & a resolution from the Democratic Club of Coronado, the reply (11/25/53) from E. F. Terrar, Jr. & a letter from Allen Currie (Acting Commissioner, PHA) re/ objecting "to the recent rent increases imposed at the public housing projects in the Coronado area;" a copy of a "Speech By Charles E. Slusser, Commissioner of Public Housing Administration At the Annual Conference of the American Municipal Association New Orleans, Louisiana, Monday, November 30, 1953" (7 pp); additional topics & issues for 1954, 1955 & 1956 are: letters (Jan.-Feb., 1954) re/ matters pertaining to Special Housing Representative Hartman, attempts by constituent Philip Gildred to repurchase land acquired by PHA, attempts by a disabled veteran to be located in permanent housing in Linda Vista, opposition by constituent L.L. Stewart to PHA efforts to dispose of over 900 buildings to the Mexican government & his dispute with PHA Housing Administrator Mrs. Faye Hartman & constituent (Dr. & Mrs. Robert G. Wirth voice concerns about the availability of Frontier and Linda Vista Public Housing and worry about Democratic moves on these issues; letters, telegram and news clipping (Mar.& Apr. 1954) re/ a constituent responds to a Wilson questionnaire with arch conservative responses & racial segregation for public housing, relinquishing of temporary war housing projects CAL-4735 and CAL-4901N, Coronado to the City of Coronado, proposed development by SDG&E of Dells Housing Project, CAL-4738 near 33rd and Market Streets, Security Trust & Savings Bank of Chula Vista & Boys Club seek transfer of Vista Square recreation area and building to City of Chula Vista; letters (May-June 1954) re/ Boys Club of Chula Vista, constituents and Linda Vista Baptist Church seek disposal of housing owned and operated by the PHA of San Diego, inquiry as to the sale of housing units in Linda Vista to non-veteran families who have lived there for years; La Mesa constituent and Navy husband are interested in purchase of housing on Barnett St. in Linda Vista, the San Diego Federal Savings and Loan Assoc. is concerned about surplus housing in San Diego and encourages the closing public housing units & Captain D.L. Mills (Commanding, MIRAMAR) encourages Wilson to be on the Housing SubCommittee of the Armed Services Committee again and also discusses reduction-in-force necessities, quarters for officers and enlisted men, as well as off-station quarters; letters (1955) re/ substandard quarters for armed service members and their dependents, a discouraged constituent may stop voting if some Public Housing is not retained for lowincome families, a constituent complains about the manner in which her property was acquired for the Los Altos Housing Project & the inadequate compensation she received; letters (1956) re/ Wilson rejects the suggestion that he is pro Public Housing; inquiry as to the "unsatisfactory living conditions for students billeted in the Forest Glen Section of the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, the California Real Estate Assoc., opposes Public Housing and Wilson's agrees & responses to the concerns of constituent about not being able "to join her husband on Okinawa due to the lack of family housing in that area."
