Scope and Contents

A large collection of letters, telegrams, news clippings, memos, photographs & a government notice of sale. Examples are: a packet of letters, news clippings & a petition signed by 185 tenants (June-Aug, 1956) re/ Mrs. Le Roy Kerr & her four children obtained a petition from low-income families in Chollas View that are concerned that the sale of this public housing tract will be given first dibs to investors not the current tenants; letter (9/5/56) & attached "Memorandum" from the PHA Realty Officer in response to meeting the petitioners as noted above; letters, Tribune news clipping & photographs (5/57) re/ notice of sale of vacant land in Chula Vista & "a set of photographs illustrating the reuse of Los Altos, CAL-4254, in Pacific Beach. This is the present construction phase following sale of the land;" 2 letters (6/57) re/ Wilson clarifies sale of Chollas View Public Housing to query from constituent realtor; 2 letters (6/57) re/ Wilson's reply to constituent Mrs. Kerr (see above) indicating he will try to have units sold to current occupants; letters (6/57) re/ more clarification & information on the status of Chollas View; a copy of a letter (7/2/57) from S.D. City Manager O. W. Campbell & Wilson's reply 7/9/57) re/ details on City Council interest in acquiring 40 acres for park purposes in Chollas View; telegram (7/25/57) from Wilson to Clair W. Burgener re/ Chollas management proposal; letters (July-Aug. 1957) re/ City of San Diego has placed the housing project under the management of Percy Goodwin Company & comment on park site potential; constituent letters (9/57) re/ various views on the future development of the Chollas View area including petition for the removal of current housing; a letter (10/13/57) from The Reverend Thomas Foster & a reply (10/24/57) from Wilson's Admin. Asst. Edward F. Terrar, Jr. re/ the Reverend's concern that Real Estate Brokers will influence the city council to "try to do away with these houses here in Chollas View. This I feel would work havoc among the people here;" 3 telegrams to Wilson (10/57) from Chollas View residents protesting the deadlock between the City Council and the government for not allowing tenant purchase of their house in Chollas View; memos, letters and news clipping (Sept.-Nov. 1957) re/ property owners, businesses, etc. complain about the delay in settling Chollas View public housing in favor of the development of the property for private needs and investment purposes; a letter (12/2/57) from constituent Mrs. Kerr & Wilson's reply (12/12/57) re/ her continued concern that those who currently occupy Chollas View housing "might get cheated out of being able to buy a duplex because of the system of drawing straws;" 2 letters (10/57) from Charles E. Slusser (Commissioner, PHA) re/ his letter to San Diego Mayor Charles Dail concerning "the disposition of the Chollas View project;" additional items in this folder are: 1 page of office notes (2/19/58) re/ information on Chollas View; letters (Mar.-Apr., 1958) re/ Reverend Thomas Foster & Wilson's replies re/ extending the time limit for completing sales of dwellings in Chollas View; letter & notes (8/58) re/ more comments on Chollas View including special allowance for disabled individuals; a copy of the "Notice of Sale Government Housing at Chollas View in San Diego, California (2/21/58), legal size 7 pages and 14 pages of Schedule A with details of street address, lot no., lot size, veterans price & sales price; letter and telegram (2/58) from Mrs Kerr and Wilson's reply re/ "present occupants have highest priority to purchase" indicates Wilson; letters (Oct.-Nov. 1958) re/ constituent complaint about contractor work on her Chollas view house in meeting City upgrades; letters (3/59) re/ more information from Mrs. Kerr, PHA and Wilson on the Chollas View properties.
