Scope and Contents

A very large collection of letters, press releases, photostats, notes, records, petitions, memorandum, reports & other items. These are not filed chronologically and are not organized systematically Examples are: Press Releases for Aug. 3 & Dec. 14, 1952 re/ "Public Housing is offering for sale at competitive bidding the commercial facilities serving its Linda Vista Housing Project" & "The Public Housing Administration has accepted bids totaling $2,059,150 for the improved and unimproved commercial facilities at its Linda Vista housing project in San Diego;" "Conference June 26 and 27, 1953 – San Diego" (2 pp.) re/ schedule for the disposition of federally owned and operated housing in San Diego; letters (1953-54) from Cynthia C. Curlee to Congressman Wilson re/ concerns from Linda Vista Committee about disposition of housing in San Diego; Memorandum (12/15/53) from Adm. Benny Decker to Bob re/ Linda Vista Liquidation; letter (12/17/53) from Glenn A. Starren to Wilson re/ "Republican deliberately working to drive out of Linda Vista those people who would be interested in buying their homes, so the whole project could be thrown to the real estate sharks," attempts to "'get' [Acting General Housing Manager Arthur b.] Howell" and other topics; 2 page from the Library of Congress, Legislative Reference Service re/ "Linda Vista Housing Project" – "about 5,000 dwellings that were built by the Federal Government in 1942 by Federal Government . . . under provisions of the Lanham Act;" approximately 25 photostatic pages of residential signatures from Linda Vista Housing dated July 1952, but with no accompanying explanation; a copy of a letter (7/14/52) from Don Makie to Wilson re/ praise for Wilson and reference to mass meeting and eviction program; a 3 page copy of "General Understanding Relative To Disposition of War Housing in San Diego June 23, 1953 & signed by representatives of PHA, HHFA, Mayor John Butler and City Mgr. O. W. Campbell: a six page letter (7/21/53) from Margaret Hottell (Editor, Linda Vista Reflector) to Wilson re/ extensive commentary on Linda Vista Housing and the eviction processes; additional examples from this fold are: letter (4/21/53) from constituents Mr. & Mrs. Theo. Dir., Goodwill Industries of San Diego County) re/ a conservative take on the issue of Linda Vista Housing and the public debt; a letter (1/20/53)from Arthur S. Osten (General Housing Mrg., PHA) re/ details on critical defense housing eligibility in San Diego; letter (2/27/53) from Monterey Woods Improvement Assn. re/ an attack on Public Housing laws, etc.; a letter (3/24/53) from Congressman Wilson re/ discussion of property bought by Mr. Carlstrom from the PHA and comments on the weekly column in the Linda Vista Reflector; copy of "To: U.S. Congressman, Robert Wilson. A PETITION TO APPEAL PUBLIC LAW 139" 4 pages, no date and no signatures; letter (n.d.) from PHA Commissioner Egan to Wilson re/ "recent sale by the Government of the commercial area at the Linda Vista project, CAL- 4092, San Diego; letter (2/20/53) from RAdm. John W. Roper (Commandant, Eleventh Naval Dist.) briefing Congressman Wilson "on the Navy's position and problems in the San Diego area;" telegrams (1/24 & 1/30/53) re/ Civic Housing Committee requests immediate action with eviction program and Wilson's response "we are doing everything possible to cause moratorium of eviction program;" petitions (n.d.) to Congressman Wilson re/ residents of CAL Project No. 4803, Linda Vista "urge that you do everything necessary to effect the sale of those houses to present occupants;" copy of letter (2/17/53) from E. Stanton Foster (Field Office Dir., PHA) re/ details on Project No. : CAL-4996N - Leila Bird – 200 units and disposition suspension; copy of four page "Report on the Relinquishment of Certain Public Housing Projects" (3/10/53) from G.A. Rick (City Planning Dir., San Diego); letters (4/53) from constituent Mrs. Bertha Singer to Wilson re/ examples of a political conservative's attack on "Demos,", public housing, rent control and other government policies; copy of "Petition To the Honorable Representatives of the State of California in the Congress of the United States" (n.d.) from a number of residents of Julian & Santa Ysabel, Calif. – an example of political conservative anti-communist concerns, support for the Smith Act. And the Walter McCarran Act, plus opposition to the passage of a Federal Fair Employment Act (F.E.P.C.).
