A collection of memorandum, letters, housing reports, surveys, reports & telegrams. Examples are: 3 page "Memorandum – To: The Executive Committee, San Diego Chamber of Commerce From: Oscar J. Kaplan and Roger N. Westberg" (11/9/56) re/ "There is mounting evidence that available housing in the San Diego area is becoming increasingly scarce . . . . [especially] the diminishing supply of rental housing;" a letter (12/12/56 from Congressman Wilson & a reply (12/21/56) from the Chamber of Commerce re/ "a serious rental housing shortage" in San Diego; copy of "Postoffice Vacancy Surveys Made in Metropolitan San Diego Cities, 1952-1953-1954-1055-1956" & "Postoffice Vacant Housing Surveys: City of San Diego (Including La Jolla);" copies of San Diego Chamber of Commerce, "Metropolitan San Diego Housing Report" First, Second and Third Quarter, 1956; letters (12/56) from Congressman Wilson, Floyd S. Bryant (Asst. Sec. of Defense), E.F. Terrar, Jr. (Wilson's Admin. Asst.) & J.S. Baughman (President, Federal National Mortgage Assn.) re/ discussion relating to the financing of an FHA Section 207 rental housing project for San Diego; letter (Jan. 1957) from Arnold Klaus (Asst. Mgr., S.D. Chamber of Commerce), an attached copy of "Portfolio for Consideration" & Wilson's reply re/ availability of money for rental housing's loan capacity is almost exhausted; a letter (1/4/57) from the San Diego Realty Board & Wilson's reply (1/29/57) re/ Navy and Army hold on pieces of PHA land in Linda Vista, Pacific Beach and Point Loma and the fear of these being taken off the tax rolls; stapled packet of corresp. (Jan.-Feb. 1957) re/ information similar to that noted above in letters from the Chamber of Commerce; letter (7/10/57) from constituent Sylvester Grant & Wilson's reply 7/18/57) re/ difficulties for Mr. Grant in finding employment and adequate housing for his family in San Diego; letters (Mar.-Apr. 1957) re/ NAS employee and family's eviction from housing & inability to find accommodation in Chollas View Project; letters (4/57) re/ intolerable housing circumstance in former Naval housing in Coronado; letter (4/57) and news clipping re/ "Local housing crisis faces new employees" with hiring of 30,000 mostly by aircraft industry; other items in this folder are: letters (2/57) re/ defense industry, construction and legislation; letters (2/57) re/ difficulty for Navy enlisted man and family in finding adequate housing in the San Diego area; letters (Mar.-June 1958) re/ Chula Vista constituent's problems with Van Stelle Realty company's sale of their rental homes to private individuals in the Pepper Lane Tract and escrow account issues; Western Union telegram from Cathy to Wilson (9/25/58) re/ Housing Admin. Albert Cole approved the request of San Diego for recertification of workable program for elimination of slums and blight; "News Release" (Housing and Home Finance Agency - 9/26/58) re/ Urban Renewal to remove slum and blight from San Diego.
