A collection of memorandum, reports, letters, telegrams, postal cards & other items. Examples are: a “List of Voluntary Welfare Agencies” (n.d.); letter (2/56) from Ellsworth Bunker (President, the American Red Cross) “To the Members of Congress” and attached “Fact Sheet for Hungarian Relief Appeal; Memorandum To All Members of Congress (3/19/56) & attached press release re/ oversubscription for 3,000 visas allotted by the Refugee Relief Act to refugees who are indigenous to the Far East . . . no new applications for visas after midnight March 26, 1956; postal cards & letter (July-Aug. 1956) urging Wilson to support legislation (S-3876 & S- 4088) to “give full support to the 6,500 additional Greek refugee quotas . . . for Greek veterans, Orphans (Under the age of 14) and Relatives;” letters (July-Aug. 1956) re/ request for Wilson’s support in allowing a couple to bring their adopted Korean-American girl to the U.S; Office of the Deputy Administrator, Refugee Relief Program, Dept. of State, “Memorandum To All Members of Congress” (10/31/56) and attached copy of a Presidential press release of October 26, 1956 with regard to orphans abroad who are unable to visas for the United States; a letter (1/24/57) from La Mesa constituent Harold H. Hougey (Evangelist, Church of Christ) & Wilson’s reply (2/4/57) re/ “the desirability of the provision of law permitting adoptive parents to bring their alien children in to this country;” letter (2/7/57) from Spring Valley constituents Mr. & Mrs. Oscar A. Fondaw & Wilson’s reply 2/11/57) re/ extension of quota of the Refugee Act of 1953 to include more orphans and continue the legality of adoption by proxy; letters (5/57) from Willard N. Fallows (AL1, USN, Japan) & Wilson re/ Mr. Fallows support for H. R. 6111, a private bill for the relief of Hisako Shimura., (aka Valerie Shinavar) to enable her to come to the U.S. with her adoptive parents;” letter (6/18/57) from CWO Ken Takemura (HQ., 11 Trans Term Comd “B” APO 21, NY & Wilson’s reply (6/25/57) re/ appeal to Wilson for assistance in the immigration problems of an orphaned child in his wife’s protective custody; other items and topics in this folder are: several letters (June and July) re/ constituents urging passage of legislation permitting more alien children to be adopted by U.S. citizens and brought to this country; letters (Feb.-Aug. 1957) re/ the Vista Westward Ministry seeks Wilson assistance in the Korean-American Orphan Adoption Program; telegrams (8/57) re/ legislation on adopted foreign orphans & predicting signing by the president; letters (Aug.-Sept. 1957) re/ constituent interest in adopting “a six year old Korean girl.”
