Scope and Contents

A very large collection of letters, resolutions, telegrams, congressional documents, newsletters, legal briefs and other related items. Some selected examples are: La Jolla Indian Village, Valley Center, “Resolution Adopted By Mission Indians of California” May 24, 1953, 1 page; a letter (6/8/53) from Purl Willis (Delegate, Representing Mission Indians) re/opposition of “46 ‘identifiable bands’ or groups of Mission Indians of California” to HR 1063; a letter (1/30/53) from F. G. Collett (Executive Representative, Indians of California, Inc.) to Wilson and attached copy of letter (1/5/53) from L. H. Barrington, Ida F. Amundsen & seven others (Indians of California, Inc.) to President Dwight D. Eisenhower re/ “Drastic changes are needed” in the Bureau of Indian Affairs; letters & news clipping (12/54) from constituent Miss Bessie G. Krohn, Wilson & Commissioner W. Barton Greenwood (Bureau of Indian Affairs, Dept. of the Interior) re/ appeal for donations of food, clothing, toys, etc. to the Navajo Indians; a letter (10/15/54) from Banning Taylor (Spokesman, Los Coyotes Indian Reservation, Warner Springs) & Wilson’s reply (12/17/54) re/ coming election and where does Wilson stand on such topics as Indian Claims Commission, fractionated land and Public Law 280?;” telegram (5/14/53) from CA Supt. of Education Roy E. Simpson to Wilson urging support to restore appropriation for Indian Education contract Funds; letters (Apr.-May 1953) from BIA Commission Greenwood & Ralph A. Tudor, Acting Secretary of the Interior re/ request to look into the election of the so-called Spokesman Committee representing the Baron Long group of Mission Indians in California;” a letter (5/21/53) from Superintendent of Public Education Roy E. Simpson (Calif. Dept. of Education) & a letter (5/15/53) from Ernest L. Marshall, Jr. (Hoopa Valley Unified School Dist.) re/ discussion of the Johnson-O’Malley Act, Mission Indians and House Report No. 314; letters (May & June, 1953) from National City constituent Mrs. Winona Adams & Congressman Wilson re/ “comments on the inequities of current legislation concerning California Indians” & the disposal of Indian land; 5 page letter (5/25/53) from Purl Willis (Mission Indian Delegate) re/ his response to a letter from Supt. Simpson - there are additional letters from Mr. Willis though out this folder & a critique of his actions; 2 page copy of “Current Resolution,” H. Con. Federation of Women’s Clubs; San Pasqual & La Jolla Reservations; Mission Indian Federation (3/12/52) & “Platform Pledges of Both Parties” (11/52); letter (1/23/53) from Lorene McGlamary (Chairman, Tribal Council, Palm Springs) & copy of Annual Progress Report Agua Caliente Band of Mission Indians, Vol. 1, No. 1, 1952 – text, photos & map – 32 pages; letters (1953) re/ claim of Eileen Whitlock for a share in the per capita distribution made to California Indians (La Jolla Rez); a copy of John Collier, “The Crisis in United States Indian Affairs,” 10/9/52 re/ a well-stated case against the current attempt to terminate the Indian Bureau and “individualize” Native Americans; a 7 page letter (1/4/54) from the Assistant Secretary of the Interior Orme Lewis & an attached copy of “A Bill . . . To provide for the termination of Federal supervision over the property of Indian tribes. . . .” 21 pages and a 5 page “Section-by-Section Analysis ;” a copy of Statistical Charts Regarding the Indians of the United States, H. R. Subcommittee on Indian Affairs, 1950, 45 pages; copies of various Senate and House bills regarding Indian lands, competency, estates of deceased Indian allottees, voluntary pension plans for individuals, state jurisdiction over crimes on reservations, revised roll of Indians in California, one-year extension of Indian claims to the Indian Claims Commission, & a bill “To establish a Department of Social Security and Education;” a copy of Superior Court, County of San Diego, Rosali Acosta vs. County of San Diego, “Memorandum of Opinion,” 9 pages; a copy of 83rd Cong., 1 Sess.
