Scope and Contents

A large collection of letters, a survey, telegrams, a map, a Seminar Address by Commissioner of Indian Affairs & a periodical excerpt. Selected examples are: letters (3/15 & 3/21/56) from R. B. James (San Diego County Clerk), Congressman Wilson & attached copy of “Sanitary Survey of San Diego County Indian Reservations January, 1956” in response to a request from Mr. Purl Willis; a letter from Banning Taylor ( Coyotes Indian Reservation) & Wilson’s reply (1/13/56) re/ support for S 51 amendment to PL 280 to help retain tribal rights; stapled packet of letters (1/56) re/ view points of Purl Willis and Mission Indian Federation on Indian surplus housing; a letter (2/3/56) from Mrs. Clarence Hoxel (Chairman of Committee on Indian Americans, First Methodist Church) & Wilson’s reply (2/21/56) re/ After a four week’s study of Indian Americans, they are concerned with the pending legislation in Congress and “We strongly protest any action toward termination of Indian tribes, without the full consent of tribes affected;” letter (3/2/56) from La Jolla constituent (Mrs.) Patricia Garth & Wilson’s reply (3/5/56) re/ Mrs. Garth’s alarm after reading a March 1956 Harper’s article stressing the “Raid On The Reservations” – “I am horrified – sick with shame if this is true;” see also letter from Point Loma Methodists and a copy of a letter (3/8/56) from Commissioner Emmons (BIA) to Editor, Harper’s; letters (Mar.-June 1956) re/ more commentary and views from Purl Willis and the Mission Indian Federation; letters (Apr.-July 1956) & Automobile Club of So.
