Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, notes, memos, press release & resolutions. Examples are: letters (12/56- 1/57) from Catherine Welch (Chairwoman, Barona Tribal Council), Wilson & W. Barton Greenwood (Deputy Commissioner of Indian Affairs) re/ request for extra funds because of the “big fire that burned the Cleveland National Forest, also destroyed all of the grass and feed on the Barona Reservation;” letters (Nov. & Dec. 1957) from constituent E. W. Watson & Wilson’s reply re/ criticism of the Relocation Program and allegation that urban Indians were starving; stapled packet of letters (June – Aug. 1957) re/ extensive commentary from El Cajon constituent Purl Willis & the reply of the Bureau of Indian Affairs as to Mr. Willis’ support for the implementation of the Termination policy; letters (Mar.-Apr. 1957) re/ requests for copies of trust patents for county Indian Reservations; a copy of Bureau of Indian Affairs, Information Service re/ Press release - 4/24/57 - “Seaton Urges Enactment of Bills Ending Federal Responsibility for 38 California Rancherias As Requested By Indians;” stapled packet of letters (Feb.-Apr. 1957) re/ water problems at Live Oak Springs Resort & the Campo Indian Rez; letters (June-Aug. 57) re/dispute over the allotment of Rincon Indian Reservation, interest of the County Board of Supervisors & support for allotment by members of the Rincon Chapel Foursquare Church; letters (Mar.-Apr. 1958) re/ a constituent requests assistance from Wilson as to her property in Pawhuska, OK. & the mineral rights owned by the Osage; letters & Resolutions (June-July 1958) re/ two Resolutions from the Federated Indians of California supporting settlement of the claims of Indians of California & criticizing those in opposition; letters & copy of a brochure (9/58) re/ responses to a constituent from the Bureau of Indian Affairs on the St. Labre Mission, Ashland, Montana solicitation as to the alleged lack of Federal services available to Northern Cheyenne Indians in Montana; a letter (1/6/58) from El Cajon constituent Purl Willis & Wilson’s reply (2/7/58) re/Willis’ continued accusations against the Indian Bureau in California.
