Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, periodical excerpts, pamphlets, news clippings and other items. Examples are: letters (1/12 & 1/31/61) from Purl Willis (Mission Indian Federation, Inc.) re/ Indian Bureau Budget for 1962-63 & need for copies of “Report 5, ‘JUSTICE,’ ‘Opinion of the Supreme Court” – Justice Black opinion No. 62, Oct. Term, 1961 & Public Law 87-122; letters (1/62) from Allen G. Benson (Mission Investment Corp.), Wilson, Selene Gifford (Asst. Commissioner, BIA) & enclosed pamphlet from the Ste. Labre Indian School re/ BIA response to Mr. Benson’s query as to the truthfulness of the accusation listed in the pamphlet as to conditions on the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation; letters (Jan.-Feb. 1962) similar to the above as to conditions on the Cheyenne Reservations and Ste. Labre Indian School; letters (Jan.- Feb. 1962) from Hoover High School senior William R. Robinson, Wilson & James E. Officer (Associate Commissioner, BIA) re/ “poor management of the Bureau” & “inquires about the future program of the Government for the Indian in Southern California;” a letter (3/1762) from El Cajon constituent Purl Willis & attached copy of Hon. Frank T. Bow, “The Expanding Policy of Commissioner Nash – It Openly Defies the Congress,” Congressional Record H.R. (1/26/62); stapled packed of letters (Feb.-May 1962) re/ pension bill (HR 6856) for the Spanish-American War and Indian Wars & specifically the United Indian War Veterans, U.S.A.’s concerns about “whether or not the actions of the Army against the Ute Indians in 1906 could be included as pensions?;” letters (May-July 1962) re/ El Cajon constituent Purl Willis (The Mission Indian Federation) writes an extensive critique of Attorney General Robert Kennedy’s article “Buying It Back from the Indians” in the March 25, 1962 issue of Life Magazine; letters (7/62) from Purl Willis (The Mission Indian Federation, Inc., of California re/ “Indians’ pending suits-Docket 80 & letter to Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy; letters (7/62) re/ a constituent’s criticism of Secretary of Interior Udall’s control of funds for the Crow Indians of Montana; letters (July-Aug. 1962) re/ 3 Alpine constituents evaluate both the Jamul and Viejas Reservations negatively and the BIA responds; letters (July – Aug., 1962) re/ El Cajon constituent & retired Lt. Col. USAF attempts to share in the distribution of funds awarded to the Omaha Tribe based on his maternal origins; stapled packet of letters and a Ste. Labre pamphlet (8/62) re/ the BIA response to another inquiry from one of Wilson’s constituents; a collection of letters from constituents, Wilson, the BIA (July-Aug. 1962) & news items re/ Crow Indians, their reservation, land claims funds and other crises which illustrates the difference between those who favor elimination of federal responsibility and control of reservations and those who see long term needs for the preservation of Indian America and their nationhood.
