Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, pamphlets, news clippings, BIA land claims statements, legislative material and other items. Examples are: letters and pamphlet (Oct.-Dec. 1963) re/ BIA response to constituent inquiry as to Ste. Labre allegations as to Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation; letters & pamphlet (12/63) re/ similar accusations made by Ste Labre Mission Indian School; letters (11/63) re/ a constituent’s views about poor nutrition for those eating fry bread; letters (Aug.-Sept.) re/ Federated Indians of California claim against Reginald E. Foster and the Dept. of Interior’s “failure to settle this claim in a satisfactory manner;” letters (Mar.-May 1963) re/ a constituent concerns about “the placing of Indian land in the State of South Dakota under the jurisdiction of the State;” letter & news clipping (Nov.-Dec. 163) re/ “Cherokee Benefits From 1963 Claim;” letters (12/63) re/ teacher from Stephen C. Foster Elementary School receives copy of “Indians of Southern California” BIA pamphlet courtesy of Wilson; letters (3/22/63) re/ The Mission Indian Federation Inc., of California takes issue with the “Proposed Indian Bureau budget for its California agency for fiscal year starting July 1, 1963;” stapled packet of letters & statistical data (1962-1963) re/ extensive critique of BIA budget by The Mission Indian Federation, Inc., of California (Purl Willis and Dan Pico) & the usual statements to “Abolish the Indian Bureau;” letters (11/63-2/64) re/ non Indian leasing of lands on the Colorado River Indian Reservation; 2 copies of Bureau of Indian Affairs, “Aboriginal Land Claims of the Indians of California,” 2/64, 3 pp.; letter (4/19/64) & attached copy of Bureau of Indian Affairs, “Claims Award – Indians of California” (3 pp.); letters & news clippings (4/64) from a constituent re/ reject the Civil Rights Bill, also help Indians be more like white people in terms of jobs and independence; letters (Mar.-Aug. 1964) re/ responses to inquiry from Chula Vista constituent “regarding claims of her tribe and repayment of a loan by her tribe in the amount of $100,000.00 to the United States to build an irrigation ditch” on the Fort Hall Reservation; memos and letters (July-Sept. 1964) re/ constituent’s concerns as to being rejected for enrollment with the Omaha Tribe; letters (5/65) re/ constituent inquiry about “brochure and appeal for funds that he received from the St. Anthony Indian Mission at Zuni, New Mexico;” letters & photocopy of news article (Mar. – Apr. 1965) re/ response to constituent inquiry about “certain lands in Ohio deeded to the Williams family by Wyandot Indians;” letters (4/65) re/ 6th grade teacher at Phoebe Hearst Elementary School receives assistance from Congressman Wilson; office notes and detailed statistical data from Bureau of Indian Affairs, “Yuma Indian Reservation,” “Development of Indian Lands for Recreation Facilities” plus inquiry about Seeley Air Base and expected increase of approx. 400 children to school district; letters from constituents Mr. Crocker and Mr. Schroeder (7/65) re/ help from Wilson in obtaining Bureau of Indian Affairs materials for use in Dr. Friedrich’s “Principles of School Administration” class at San Diego State College; letters (Nov.- Dec. 1965) responses to Chula Vista constituent re/ Indian Claims Commission S ettlement for Indians of California.
