Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, memorandum, notes, news clippings & telegrams. Examples are: a letter (n.d.) from constituent E. T. Slagle & Wilson’s reply (8/10/54) re/ an inquiry “as to the effective date of the Railroad Retirement legislation which you read about in the newspaper;” a stapled packet of letters (10/54-5/55) & a news clipping, “Salesmen Testify in Bribery Trial” re/ Subcommittee “investigation into the matter of actions taken by the Marine Corps with respect to certain members of the Corps as a result of the mishandling of an insurance matter at Camp Pendleton, California” – this packet contains a 15 page letter from General Lemuel C. Shepherd, Jr. (Commandant of the Marine Corps); a letter (6/14/55) from constituent Mrs. Carter C. Smith & Wilson’s reply (6/21/56) re/ inquiry as to “a bill providing federal housing mortgage insurance for civilians employed on defense research and development projects” – Wilson indicated that the bill applied to China Lake, not San Diego; letters (5/17 & 5/26/55) from Congressmen Wilson & F. Edward Hebert re/ “irregularities in the sale of commercial life insurance at Camp Pendleton” & investigation of the sale of commercial life insurance to the military in Europe; letters & memorandum (May-July 1956) re/ response to a constituent’s concern as a life insurance agent to “Implementation of DOD Instruction 1344.1 dated 15 December 1955, subject: ‘Solicitation of Commercial Life Insurance on Military Installations;’” packet of letters & memorandum (June-July 1956) re/ another constituent insurance agent contacts Wilson as to DOD Instruction 1344.1; packet of letters & telegrams (Sept.-Oct. 1958) re/ responses to constituent inquiries as to “proposal for a self-insurance program on certain Army and Air Force facilities which are presently insured through various independent insurance agents and brokers;” letters (July-Aug. 1958) re/ local insurance agents, such as Barney and Barney, receive information from Wilson as to their fear that local agents are being supplanted by some broker in the New York – Washington area; letters (Mar. – July 1959) re/ “Westgate-California Corporation dealing with the Fish and Wildlife Service’s Fishing Vessel Mortgage Program;” letters (Aug-Sept. 1959) re/ Chula Vista constituent C. Jay Wells receives assistance from Wilson as to “Railroad Retirement Board relative to your unemployment insurance claim;” letters (Nov.-Dec. 1959) re/ more information as to Railroad Retirement Board and constituent requests; letters (Nov.-Dec. 1959) re/ reinstatement on DOD approved list of insurance companies is sought by a local insurance agent; letters (June-Aug. 1960) re/ local firms protest against “proposed centralized purchase of insurance coverage for Navy nonappropriated fund activities;” letters (2/60 & 3/60) re/ Wilson responds to constituent protest over insurance premiums; letters (9/61) re/ details on unemployment benefits being denied to unemployed RR employee by Railroad Retirement Bd.; letters (1/61) re/ notice to Wilson that “the Mutual of New York’s San Diego Agency had moved to new and larger quarters due to the rapid growth of this area;” a stapled packet of corresp. (Sept. 1960-Feb. 1961) re/ local protest and controversy over the “Consolidated World Wide Insurance Program of the Marine Corps Exchanges.”
