Scope and Contents

A collection of memos, notes, letters, a newsletter, a “Survey” publication & other items. Examples are: Memo and office note (1/65) re/a request for “an accumulation of information blasting LBJ’s approach to the nation’s unemployment problem” to be sent to Vassar student, Miss Susan Hosmer; a copy of a newsletter – “Political memo from COPE,” No. 25-65, Dec. 13, 1965 re/ “Council Urges All-Out Effort In ’66 Voting;” letters (10/65) & pp. 106-107 from U. S. News & World Report, Oct. 11, 1965 re/ “A Call For ‘Full Investigation of the Labor Relations Board” & Wilson’s desire for Republicans to regain control of the Congress in 1966; routing slip, office note and letter (6/65) re/ a group termed the “American Brotherhood of Electrical Workers” raises questions about the NLRB and criticizes IBEW Local 441; letters (Mar.-Sept. 1965) re/ comments from the National Right to Work Committee & a copy of Senator Lyndon Johnson letter (3/15/49) indicating he “voted for the Taft-Hartley Law and voted to over-ride the President’s veto. I see no reason now to repeal or emasculate that law;” letters (June & July 1965) & attached copy of the Survey of Community Employment Trends in Southern California; a letter (6/30/65) from Donald K. Overhiser (Financial Secretary-Business Representative, Carpenters’ Union, Local 2020 & Ed Gillenwaters’ reply 7/7/65) re/ As a voter in Wilson’s district, Mr. Overhiser supports the passage of H. R. 77 for the repeal of Section 14-B of the Taft-Hartley Act. It was time the “‘pro-Right-to Work’ states be brought to a standstill;” letters & telegram (6/65) re/ President’s National Youth Opportunity Program and commentaries from Wilson and J. F. Sinnott, SDG&E; letters (5/65) re/ a sad commentary from Santee constituent Laurence D. Young on the difficulties this disabled veteran has had in San Diego obtaining employment; letters (5/65) re/ La Mesa constituent Beverly J. Campbell’s difficulty with Land Title Insurance Co. in obtaining vacation money owed to her; letters (4/65) re/ high school honors student taking political science class at the Junior College seeks sources of information on employment situation in San Diego from Wilson – Wilson indicated that “the ill-advised closing of the San Diego Naval Repair Facility, and the evolution of the mass-produced aircraft industry dealt us the most severe unemployment blow,” although the doubling of population here in ten years also was “a prime factor in the current unemployment situation;” letters (Apr.-May 1965) re/ Wilson constituents who are members of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters will be visiting Washington to support repeal of Section 14-B of Taft-Hartley; letters (4/65) re/ support for H. R. 6675, the Omnibus Social Security Bill and H. R. 77, the bill calling for the repeal of Section 14-b of the Right to Work Law; letters (4/65) re/ a constituent’s criticism of the United Mine Workers and their [alleged] violence in Kentucky, as well as his other racial-oriented remarks; letters (21/64-3/65) re/ El Cajon constituent Mrs. Mary Elmore requests Wilson to inquiry as to why the CA Dept. of Employment did not select her for MDTA training? Was it because she is a registered Republican? Wilson’s letter does not sustain her accusation; letters (2/65) re/ former constituent with property holdings in San Diego informs Wilson about “a very serious [labor] problem we have here in our plant in Burbank;” letters (2/65) re/ a “Resolution” from the Astronautics Division of the Engineers and Architects Assn. that indicated that since employment at their plant has decreased from a peak of 33,000 to a present work force of less than 12,000 in the last three years that premium pay rates for extended work-weeks go from one half to two times basic rates for such overtime hours and that the normal work week be reduced from 40 hours to 32 hours; a letter (1/13/65) from the International Assn. of Fire Fighters to Wilson re/ recent victory of Wilson, other political and economic issues and the Assn.’s desire to maintain the traditional exclusion of fire fighters from the jurisdiction of the Social Security Act; letters (12/64 & 1/65) re/ more anti-union commentary from the National Right to Work Committee & opposition to the repeal of Section 14(b) of Taft-Hartley; a letter (1/4/65) from San Diego constituent Dallas Wilborn (President, The Liberty Bell) & Wilson’s reply (1/7/65) re/ breakfast in Washington and opposition to repeal Section 14(b).
