Scope and Contents
A collection of letters, telegrams & memorandum. Examples are: letters (Apr.-May 1954) from Robert S. Bertram (President, San Diego Typographical Union No. 221), H. J. Swartz (Dir., Tax Rulings Div., U.S. Treasury Dept.) & Congressman Wilson re/ commentary on treatment for Federal income tax purposes of pensions received by members of the Typographical Union; a large stapled packet of letters, telegrams & memorandum (Feb. – May ’55) from the San Diego Employers Assn., the San Diego Roofing Contractors Assn. & Wilson re/anti union complaints against the NLRB & local construction contracts; letters (5/55) re/ enclosure from the Library of Congress to Wilson as to “Material on labor unions” as requested by Union-Tribune Publishing Co.; letters & questions (4/56) re/ government purchases from farmers, secondary boycotts and the Taft-Hartley Act; letters (Sept.-Oct. ’56) re/ Carlos Pickering (President, Mrs, Conklings Bakery) & his concerns about bakery strike against the Peter Wheat Bread Co. in Long Beach – a non-union shop; letters (11/56) re/ NLRB response to alleged “unfair labor practices existing with Local 481” (Chauffeurs, Garage and Automotive Employees); letters (Apr.-May ’57) re/ a San Diego constituent’s suggestions about “five areas in which existing labor legislation might be improved;” letters (4/57) re/ a constituent’s suggestion about “the necessity for the establishment of Federal policing agents over the activities of Labor Unions;” letters (5/57) re/ San Diego Trust & Savings Bank V.P Thomas W. Sefton’s seven legislative proposals to restrict labor unions; letters (5/57) re/ San Diego Canter Van and Storage suggests “five major fields in which Federal legislation is needed” – all of these would restrict the activities of labor unions.
