Scope and Contents

A collection of Visitor’s Cards, letters, a Resolution, news release, telegrams, postal card, booklets & notes. These are not filed chronologically. Examples are: a collection of Wilson’s Visitor’s Cards for constituent’s attending a Building Trades Conference in Washington, D.C.; a letter (5/17/60) from John W. Quimby (Sec.-Trea., Labor Council of San Diego County) & Wilson’s reply re/sending Wilson a copy of a Resolution dealing with the reduction of certain excise taxes; a letter (5/26/60) from the “Committee To Strengthen the Frontiers of Freedom” & a News Service release (5/19/60) from the Chamber of Commerce of the United States re/ “national support of mutual security” in the face of “The unyielding and hostile posture of the Soviet Union at the Summit Conference;” letters & telegram (Apr.-May 1960) from Robert Golden (Golden M. H. Const. Co.), Wilson & William T. Evans (Special Asst. to General Counsel, NLRB) re/jurisdictional dispute at the construction of the College Grove Shopping Center. This was only a temporary stoppage between plumbers and electrical workers, but Golden was alarmed enough to suggest an injunction; a letter (6/6/60) from “Anonymous” to Wilson re/ fear of unionism taking over the country and this former Democrat converts to being a Republican; a letter (6/3/60) & referral notice to Wilson from Arthur Biggs (Sec.-Trea. of the United Mine Workers (District Twenty-Two) re/ concerns about the Burns Creek Project Bill, S. 281 as an out and out, unsound and unnecessary power project which will hurt coal miner employment; a packet of letters, telegrams & a news clipping (Mar.-May 1960) re/ opposition from Equipment and Trailer Rental Assn. & related businesses to Teamster Local 481 to organize employees; letters (Apr.-May 1960) re/ problems connected to a widow’s attempt to receive compensation from the UMW’s Anthracite Health and Welfare Fund; letters (5/60) re/ constituent worries that his fellow union Convair employees are not showing support for Wilson - older workers and non-union employees do support him – Wilson responds with how many defense contracts he has brought to San Diego; letters & postal card (3/60) re/ alleged controversy between Teamsters Union & insurance agents and employees; note, letter and questionnaire (4/60) re/ the San Diego Machinist Non-Partisan Political League requests Wilson complete their questionnaire & be interviewed; letters (Mar.-Apr. 1960) re/ the Council on Political Education (AFL-CIO) requests an interview with Wilson, but he was not available; letter & telegram (4/60) re/ constituent praises Wilson for help against Teamster picketing; a 12 page booklet produced by the Committee to Re-elect Hoffa Threatened Congressman entitled “I Demand That You Purge 56 Members of Congress! Hoffa’s Threat Hits You Too;” letters (3/60) re/ Westinghouse Electric Corp.’s explanation for the closing of the Nuttall Plant in Pittsburg; office note and attached New York Herald Tribune published “Hoffa’s ‘Purge List’”—Wilson was not on the list; a letter (3/30/60) from the San Diego Junior Chamber of Commerce re/ posting of pickets at the “Boat, Sports and Outdoor Living Show” because the Chamber had decided not to use union ticket takers and sellers, a break from years of using union employees – this letter is a good example of the Chamber’s narrow anti-union decision and the back lash that resulted; letters & legal case (Feb.-Mar. 1960) re/ Mission Valley Inn, NlRB & Case No. 21-RC-5653 “Report on Objections” in election; letters (2/60) re/ follow up on complaints from a constituent as to alleged improper operation of the local union of the Operating Engineers; letters (Jan.-Feb. 1960) re/ member of the UMW in the early 40s who lost his right foot in a mining accident at 17 and now has Parkinson disease and is unable to work has assistance from Wilson in obtaining a pension from UMW Welfare and Retirement Fund.
