Scope and Contents
A collection of letters & one resolution. Examples are: letters (Jan.-Feb. 1963) re/ responses to inquiry from Luce, Forward, Hamilton & Scripps “into the circumstances of the crash of a Navy F3H fighter on January 4, 1961 near Miramar Naval Air Station which resulted in Lieutenant [William John] Kozel’s death; letter & cocktail party invite (3/63) re/ Attorney Richard M. English’s letter to Wilson as to expediting freedom for the “Birdman of Alcatraz;” letters (3/63) re/ the case of Robert Stroud (Birdman of Alcatraz) and opposition to his release from Mrs. Ida Turner, widow and son Harold Turner, of the federal prison guard murdered by Stroud; letters (June-July 1963) re/ a constituent’s conservative opposition to the Kennedy administration, but also illustrative of the ongoing Republican criticism going back thirty years to Democratic policies; letter (7/24/63) & attached copy of Exhibit A & F to the July 8, 1963 minutes of the Board of Directors of the San Diego County Bar Association re/ support for Judge James M. Carter to fill the vacancy in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit; letters (9/63) & attached “Federal Defenders Committee Legislative Report” for 1962 & 1963 through April 30 re/ support for Senate Bill 63 that “provides for the representation of indigent defendants in criminal cases in the United States District Courts;” letters (10/63) revisiting the previous corresp. (see Folder 1) re/ constituent Mrs. E. Rae Gay, Carter County OK Court Clerk Ancel Graham & Wilson continue to attempt to compensate Mrs. Gay for lost check; letters (Nov.- Dec. 1963) re/ Attorney Frank L. Hirst requests Wilson’s assistance in helping a divorced Navy wife obtain custody of her children as so ordered by the Court.
