Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, news releases, Post Office Dept. transcript, envelopes & memorandum. Examples are: letters (12/62-6/63) from constituent J. Clifford Wallace (Cray, Cary, Ames & Frye), Wilson & H.B. Montague (Chief Inspector, Post Office Dept.) re/ responses to Mr. Wallace’s complaints as to receiving unsolicited material from Ralph Ginzburg of Eros Magazine; letters (Apr.-June 1963) from constituent H. S. Murphy, Wilson & H. B. Montague (Chief Inspector, Post Office Dept.) re/ unsolicited mail from Ralph Ginzburg of Eros Magazine; letters (Mar.-June 1963) re/ further information as to “the latest action against Ralph Ginzburg of Eros Magazine;” Note for File and letter (5/1/63) from Wilson & reply (5/9/63) from J. W. Tew (Assist. Planning-Production Manager for Planning, U.S. Government Printing Office) re/ query from Herb Klein to Wilson about “GPO’s publishing of a story entitled PT BOAT written by Mr. Buckley with a forward under the signature of John Kennedy” & questioned franking use; a letter (5/10/63) from Perkins Book Shop (Coronado, CA) re/ criticism of advertisements received from Superintendent of Documents using franking privilege; letters (7/63) from Lyon Rural Electric Co., Lindsley H. Noble, (Acting Asst. Postmaster General) & Wilson’s reply (7/63) re/ concerns about retaining the parcel post system, which was under fire – Mr. Lyon deemed it “essential to our survival as a business company;” letters, memo & news release (May-Aug. 1963) re/ responses to a complaint from a freshman Republican Congressman about the post office delivering a notice of the opening of a new post office to patrons in Robbinsdale, MN – this was a partisan false alarm; 4 page copy of Post Office Dept., “Transcript of Laws Relating to the Franking Privilege of Members of Congress “ (11/9/49 –rec’d 12/6/54); 7 page copy of George B. Galloway (Senior Specialist, American Government, Legislative Reference Service, Library of Congress), “The ‘Leave to Print’ and Franking Privileges: Their Use and Abuse;” letters (Mar.-Apr. 1963) & enclosed envelopes re/ responses to a constituent’s complaint that “Today’s mail included the 11 mailed advertisements from the Wall Street Journal. This type of barrage through the U.S. Mails is both uneconomical and disturbing and an infringement upon the privacy of one’s home;” 2 letters (3/63) re/ complaints from constituents as to receiving obscene matter from Eros through the mails; a letter (2/4/63) from Bob Wilson (Chairman’s Bulletin, National Republican Congressional Committee) and attached copy of “Memorandum Concerning the Franking Privilege for Members of Congress;” stapled packet of letters & envelope (12/62-1/63) re/ responses to constituent’s complaint about his six-year old daughter receiving “illegal cards to children” from Dandy Products, Inc. of Chicago.
