Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, a pamphlet, a photocopy, newsletters, telegrams, a postal card & a news release. Examples are: a copy of CA Committee, Overland Mail Centennials, Overland to the Pacific, Information Pamphlet, Brochure No. 1, 1956 (36pp.); a letter (6/12/58) from La Jolla constituent Alfred Dustin & attached photocopy re/ “Urges Hannah Dustin Stamp;” letters (Feb.-Apr. 1958) & newsletter, “Butterfield Overland Mailbag” (Vol. 1, Feb. 16, 1958) re/ Overland Mail Centennial & philatelic aspects, letters (Feb.-Apr. 1958) from Philip S. Rush (Publisher, The Southern California Rancher), Congressman Wilson & L. Rohe Walter (Special Asst. to the Postmaster General) re/ comments as to the proposed design for the Overland Mail centennial stamp; a letter (6/17/58) from Clarence E. Murphy (Managing Dir., California Credit Union League) & Wilson’s reply (6/24/58) re/ “issuance of a commemorative stamp to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Credit Union’s service;” letters & telegram (Apr.-July 1959) re/ “clarifying the news relative to the issuance of the Camp Fire Girls commemorative stamp . . . will be issued on the opening day of the Jubilee Convention;” Post Office Dept. Release No. 169 –“For Release Friday, June 26, 1959 . . . Postmaster General Arthur E. Summerfield announced today that a commemorative postage stamp honoring the Campfire Girls will be issued on November 1, 1960, the opening day of their Golden Jubilee Convention celebration in New York City; a packet of letters, postal card & telegrams (May-July 1959) re/ constituents, Wilson and others support the Campfire Girl commemorative stamp; letters (MayJune 1959) re/ additional comments on commemorative stamp and constituent Robert J. Sullivan chides Wilson – “you have committed a ‘Faux Pas’- and I’ll venture that henceforth it will become known that there are TWO GREAT GIRL ORGANIZATIONS in these United States. One is known as CAMPFIRE GIRLS, and the other is known as THE GIRL SCOUTS.” Wilson had sent a telegram to the Sullivans noting that “Postmaster General announced Girl Scout Stamp Issued November 1 Nineteen Sixty;” letters (Apr.-Dec. 1959) & copy of S. 1559 86th Cong., 1st Sess. Calendar No. 227 (3/25/59) re/ “A Bill To provide for the striking of medals in commemoration of the one hundredth anniversary of the first significant discovery of silver in the United States, June 1859” and letters referring to bronze medals commemorating the Space Age and other topics; a letter (11/24/59) from S.D. County District Attorney James Don Keller & Wilson’s reply 12/1/59) re/ controversy involving a Mr. Pugh (New Plaza Hotel), Dallas TX resident Mrs. Peter O’Donnell, demands for money & Mr. Pugh’s return to Patton State Hospital.
