Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, news clippings, news release, telegrams & a copy of a House Report. Most of these are filed from November back to March. Examples are: letters (Sept.-Nov.) from constituent Fred F. Payton, Wilson & Leo H. Irwin (Chief Counsel, House Ways and Means Committee) re/ concerns “with respect to medical care for individuals under age 65;” a letter (11/4/65) from constituent Charles E. Blakeslee, attached news clipping, “Medicare Plan Stirs Fear of State Cost Rise” (Copley News Service) & Wilson’s reply (11/8/65) re/ constituent’s concern over the effect of Medicare on his hospitalization arrangements; a letter (11/2/65) from Michael O’Connor, attached copy of “Special Report: Medicare” – Independent, & Wilson’s reply (11/10/65) re/ Wilson was impressed by this Special Report and requested a supply for his constituent inquiries about Medicare; letters (Sept.-Oct. 1965) from constituent Mrs. Margaret M. Dye, Wilson & Robert M. Ball (Commissioner of Social Security) re/ responses to Dye’s inquiry as a Navy widow in terms her medical care; a letter (rec’d 4/12/65) from Calvin G. Maloney, M.D. (National City) to the Honorable Wilbur Mills (Chairman, House Ways and Means Committee) re/ a 3 page critique of Medicare; Press Release (7/30/65) from the Office of the White House Press Secretary re/ “Remarks of the President at the signing of the Medicare Bill At the Harry S. Truman Library” with an introduction from former President Harry Truman; a collection of letters, postal cards &telegrams (Aug.-Mar. 1965) from constituents, doctors and others with Wilson’s replies re/ inquiries about the Medicare law as well as complaints against it; a Press Release (7/9/65) from Senator George Murphy re/ “I regret very much . . . that the present so-called Medicare Bill is one which I cannot in good conscience support;” a copy of “GOP Health Plan Best Meet Needs of the Nation’s Elderly” & “Byrnes Plan vs. LBJ Proposal;” a copy of 89th Cong., 1st Sess., House Report No. 213 Social Security Amendments of 1965 -- REPORT of the Committee On Ways and Means on H.R. 6675, March 29, 1965, Gov. Printing Office.
