Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, news clippings, an AMVETS brochure & a Memorial List. Examples are: letters (7/18 & 7/20/55) from Wilson & his Admin. Asst. E. F. Terrar, Jr. & attached news clipping re/ “Fund Drive Starts for Mitcher Plaque” to be placed at the Mitscher Field, Miramar Air Station; letters (Mar.-Apr. 1960) re/ acquisition of the USS Steelhead by the U. S. Submarine Veterans of World War II and establishing it as a national memorial for San Diego; a letter (6/29/60) from P.E. Howard (National Executive Dir., AMVETS), Wilson’s reply (7/5/60) & enclosed copy of U. S. S. Arizona Pearl Harbor December 7, 1941 1102 American Heroes . . . Are They Forgotten? A National Memorial to Eternal Vigilance – text and photos – AMVETS brochure & “Memorial List of Naval Personnel Entombed In the USS Arizona – California –Name – Rate – Next of Kin” (17 pp.) re/ support for H. R. 12709, a bill to authorize certain funds to complete the work on the USS Arizona Memorial Shrine; a copy of 86th Cong., 2nd Sess., H.R. 12709, 1 page; legal sized photocopy of news articles and photo of President Eisenhower (6/60) re/ support for Arizona Memorial; a letter (8/17/60) from San Diego Mayor Charles C. Dail to Congressman Wilson re/ support for the establishment of a Federated George Washington Carver Centennial Celebration Committee; a letter (8/1/60) from Sidney J. Phillips (President, George Washington Carver National Monument Foundation) & Wilson reply (8/25/60) re/ Wilson supported legislation to create a commission; letters (6/62) re/ concerns of Coronado constituent Lloyd M. Harman are responded to by Congressmen Perkins and Wilson as to the possible endangerment by land development near “‘Harman Station’ the fort built by my ancestor Matthias Harmon in 1787 in Eastern Kentucky;” copy of a letter (7/10/62) from Wilson to Imperial Beach constituent Jimmy Hinze re/ Mr. Hinze’s interest in obtaining a copy of a bill which would provide for the construction of a Statue of Liberty on Alcatraz Island. Wilson indicated that at present no legislation was being considered; a promotional card, “Souvenir Medals Struck From Navy’s First Ship,” from constituent Fred W. Rhudy.
