Scope and Contents
A collection of letters, news clippings, telegrams, a memorial list & other items. Examples are: letters (July & Aug. 1959) from constituent Robert Lewis Reyburn & Congressman Wilson re/ information on the USS Arizona and concern over the lack of care for the ship; news clipping The San Diego Union (11/12/59) re/ “San Diegans Pledge Help to Save the ‘Star [of India]’ . . . . Twenty seven labor unions, firms and individuals offered an estimated $2,700 worth of labor to help remove several hundred tons of ballast from the holds of the 275-foot craft;” letters (12/59) from constituent Mrs. E. M. Eaton, Wilson & Victor Eckland (Public Relations Mgr., Matson Navigation Company) re/ a response to the suggestion “that Matson Lines underwrite a pilgrimage to the USS ARIZONA for the survivors of the victims of that wartime tragedy;” telegrams (6/61) re/ concerns responded to that the FDR Memorial Bldg. would not have a ramp for the handicapped; letters (Apr. & June 1961) re/ FDR Memorial; letter & receipt (6/61) re/ The Washington Memorial Chapel, Valley Forge – thanked Wilson “most heartily for your gift of Five Dollars;” letters (6/61) from Alvin S. Cox (Cox Bros. Construction Co., Stanton, CA) & attached 2 page copy from Babson’s Washington Forecast, “Barometer Letter, June 17, 1961” re/ an attack on “School –Aid Fiasco” & Mr. Cox’s complaints against federal aid to education and removal of “Bircher” General Walker from command in Germany. Mr. Cox’s initial letter focused on helping the Memorial at Pearl Harbor for the USS Arizona; a letter (6/13/61) from the Navy League of the United States & Wilson’s reply (6/23/61) re/ support for H. R. 44 to provide funds for the appropriate memorial; letter (6/26/61) from James Copley (the San Diego Council of the Navy League of the United States) & Wilson’s reply (7/14/61) re/ “Although I have not taken a strong position on the matter of the Arizona Memorial, your letter is very convincing to me and I will do everything possible to assist in this matter” of support for H.R. 44: letter (7/10/61) from H. Tucker Gratz (Chairman, Pacific War Memorial Commission) & attached “Resolution Adopted at the Fifty-third Annual Meetings of the Governors’ Conference in Extraordinary Session, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, June 27, 1961 ,” “Casualty List U.S.S. Arizona, December 7, 1941 – [listing] State – U.S.N. – U.S.M.C. – Total,” & “Remarks by Rear Admiral Robert L. Campbell, USN Commandant, 14th Naval District – Memorial Day Services – May 30, 1961 – Aboard the USS Arizona;” copy of a letter (9/14/61) from Robert H. Molitor (El Cajon, CA) to Senator Paul H. Douglas re/ a rant against FDR, his memorial and some historians; letters (9/61) re/ Wilson’s attempts to locate the anchors for the USS San Diego. Union Minerals & Alloys Corp. had already scrapped them at the beginning of 1961; a letter (9/8/61) from constituent George Markham, attached news clipping & Wilson’s reply (9/20/61) re/ another concerned Republican who had joined those critics who blamed FDR as to the Pearl Harbor sneak attack, thus more opposition to a FDR Memorial in Washington, D.C.
