Scope and Contents

A collection of a Wilson speech, letters, memorandum, news articles, pamphlets, office notes, statements, a postal card & a Presidential Report to Congress. Examples are: “Newsletter Supplement - ‘THERE IS NO MISSILE GAP . . .’ By Rep. Bob Wilson of California”—these are excerpts from Wilson’s speech to a Republican Rally in Kansas City, Missouri, Feb. 29, 1960; letters & news clipping (Mar.-Apr. 1960) from La Jolla constituent Dale C. Krause (Scripps Institution of Oceanography), his attached news clipping – “Polaris Sub Work Speeded Up” & “Polaris Submarine Missile Fails in 1st Pop-up Test” (Evening Tribune, 3-28-60) & Wilson’s reply re/ Mr. Krause mentions the missile gap & Wilson replies extensively and refers to Admiral Raborn “with respect to the competency of the Polaris program;” a letter (3/13/60) from constituent Norman E. Foster & Wilson’s reply (3/23/60) re/ space program and need for more funding; a letter (2/5/60) from Stan Evans (The Indianapolis News) & Wilson’s reply (2/17/60) re/ “Congratulations on your firm stand against the alarmists who seem bound and determined to prove that America is ‘behind’ the USSR, no matter what;” letters (2/60) re/ constituent concerns about “Atlas Plant on Kearney Mesa operating at only 50% capacity” is responded to by Wilson – a partisan debate; letters (Jan.-Feb.1960) re/ Wilson responses to La Jolla constituent’s query about Atlas ICBM & discussion of income tax cuts in time of defense needs; letters & copy of statement by Secretary of Defenses Thomas S. Gates, Jr. (3/60) re/ more information on the “missile gap” partisan issue; letter, memorandum & clipping from Parade (Sept.-Oct. 1960) re/ comparative position of U.S. & USSR on ballistic missiles; letters (10/60) re/ “information we have received concerning your inquiry [from Irvin J. Kahan] about the plans for a giant missile center in Southern California;” a large, fold-out color reproduction showing “Missiles: 1960” (1959, Remsen Advertising Agency, Inc.); letters & pamphlet (Apr.-May 1960) re/ material related to NASA & film on space development; letters (Mar.-Apr. 1960) re/ inquiry from George W. Bergstrom, Jr. as to exhibit for International Relations at SDSC for Founder’s Day Celebration – “Relations In the Space Age;” letters (4/60) re/ Wilson’s response to high school query as to taxes, defense expenditures and Atlas vs Titan missiles; letters (1/60) & attached copies of W. C. Hembury’s “The Master Plan” (7 pages) & “Missile Systems VS Space Systems, Or Progress In Space” (10 pages) re/ Wilson appreciated receiving these documents and kept them in his files; letters (May-July 1960) re/ responses to inquiry from El Cajon constituent James F. Parsley as to underwater weapons systems & USSR; letters (June-July, 1960) re/ 1960 Aerospace Facts and Figures publication; a letter (6/16/60) from Herbert F. York (Director of Defense Research and Engineer, DOD) to Wilson re/ reply to query from Wilson as to “information on the anti-missile missile program;” a 7 page “Statement By Dr. J. P.
