Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, office notes, maps, a news letter, news clippings, a Report & a booklet. Examples are: letters & office notes (May-June 1958) from Wilson, John C. Doerfer (Chairman, FCC), Captain (USN) Carlton R. Adams (Deputy Asst. to the Secretary of Defense) & J. W. Clear (Acting Dir., Office of Emergency Planning, Office of the Secretary of Defense) re/ “participation of radio broadcast stations in Mexico in CONELRAD” to promote training, readiness of equipment and experience for civil defense personnel; a stapled packet containing letters, notes & maps (June-Aug. 1958) re/ details related to loan and grant program for Gieger Counters, Ion Chambers and Dosismeters to the State of California for training purposes, a map showing “Dispersal of Evacuees” for San Diego County and County of San Diego commentaries; letters, notes & a Weekly News Digest (10/58-4/59) re/ the decision “to establish a OCDM Western Instructor Training Center at Alameda, California;” stapled packet containing letters (10/58-4/59) & an International Association of Fire Chiefs News Letter (Vol. 23, No. 2) re/ problems with standardization of fire equipment, especially hose threads and other details; letters (Mar.-Apr. 1959) re/ problems for the County Civil Defense and Disaster Organization in obtaining “minimum third-class postage charges” for dissemination of survival information & training course details from local director Wadsworth; letters (10/58-3/59) re/ responses to Lakeside constituent Miss Jerri Duham’s concern about the number of people who know nothing about Civil Defense, or what to do in case of disaster;” letters & photo copies of news clippings (May-June 1959) re/ CONELRAD test “fiasco” and other matters as discussed by KFMB, editorials and Congressman Wilson; a letter (6/25/59) from Leo A. Hoegh (Dir., Office of Civil and Defense Mobilization) to Wilson & a copy of The Family Fallout Shelter (MP-15, 32 pages) re/ Mr. Hoeg’s reminder that “The Administration’s policy on shelter states that individuals are responsible for providing their own radiation fallout shelters to be used in case of nuclear attack;” letters, a report and maps (Mar.-June 1959) re/ information on CONELRAD situation in San Diego which included a “Report on CONELRAD Drill During Operation ALERT 1959” & handdrawn maps showing receiving capacities in County from stations 640 & 1240 during the test; letters (9/59) re/ comment from Congressman George Mahon (Lubbock, Texas) re/ Project Alert and fears of communism; letters (July-Aug. 1959) re/ PL 85-606 & Senate restoration of $15 million to the Office of Civil Defense and Mobilization for the matching of local personnel and administrative costs.
