Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, news clippings, suggestions & a brochure. Examples are: letters (11/59- 1/60) from constituent Mrs. Robert C. Vik (East San Diego Junior Women’s Club), Wilson & Leo A Hoegh (Office of the Director, Office of Civil and Defense Mobilization) re/ a discussion on “the provision of shelters against nuclear attack;” letters (11/59-1/60) from potential constituent Bernard Owens, Wilson & Leo A. Hoegh (Office of Civil and Defense Mobilization) re/ a member of the senior class of Crawford High School asks questions about nuclear attack, shelters, traffic impacts and other problems; letters (12/59-3/60) from Ivan E. Lake (Deputy Dir., Public Information, Civil Defense and Disaster Organization, Gillespie Field, County of San Diego), Wilson & Congressman Wilbur Mills (Chairman, Committee on Ways and Means) re/ proposed H.R. 8124, “providing for income tax write-offs for citizens building a fallout shelter, and permitting them to amortize shelter costs over a sixty month period;” a letter (8/8/60) from L. J. Wadsworth (Dir. of Civil Defense, County of San Diego) & Wilson’s reply (3/23/60) re/ concerns that “the financing of Civil Defense Administration Expenses authorized under PL-606 . . . failed to get the money” in the last session of Congress; a copy of a letter (5/15/60) from Chula Vista constituent C.D. Dawson (Dawson and Dorn, Research and Development Specialists) re/ “Feet Dragging on Essential Defense Items” – especially as to water safety; a large stapled collection of letters, a news clipping (5/60) & copies of The National Survival Committee, “Suggestions on How to Write the Letter” & “A Proposed Plan on the National Survival Issue” re/ providing information to Wilson as the actions of this San Diego committee; letters (MayJune 1960) re/ responses to query from an elderly lady who lived alone, doesn’t drive & lacks a cellar as to provisions for fallout shelters being made in San Diego; letters (8/60) from Congressmen J. Floyd Breeding and Bob Wilson & attached copy of a brochure re/ Congressman Breeding’s sends Wilson a brochure from Underground Vaults & Storage, Inc. focusing on the potential in these salt mines in Kansas for possible defense purposes; letters (Oct.-Nov. 1960) from Lakeside Union School District, Wilson, L. J. Wadsworth (Dir., Civil Defense, County of San Diego) & Leo A. Hoegh (Dir., Office of Civil and Defense Mobilization) re/ approval for the construction of a fallout shelter for this school district and potential for other school districts in the U.S.; a letter (10/27/60) from constituent Mrs. Walter L. Harper & Wilson’s reply (11/10/60) re/ concerns of the Pacific Beach P.T.A. about fall out from a nuclear attack and lack of shelters or evacuation procedures.
