Scope and Contents
A collection of letters, press releases, pamphlets, news clippings, statements, excerpt from the Congressional Record – Appendix & newsletters. These are not filed in chronological order. Examples are: letters & news releases (1/64) re/ new lumber standards from the Dept. of Commerce and support for from 14 different organizations; letters and statements (Jan.-Feb. 1964) re/ new lumber standards; a copy of a “Presentation to The Honorable Luther D. Hodges The Secretary of Commerce by Representatives of the Users, Specifiers, Distributors and Producers of American Softwood Lumber January 31, 1964” (17 pp.); a letter (2/11/64) & an excerpt from Hampshire Review Bulletin. May 30, 1959, Vol 7, No. 7 re/ California and New Hampshire resident Robert Jefferson’s long involved effort through the Court of Claims & the Dept. of Interior as to loss of mineral rights to land, Section 36 – Kern County, in the early 1900’s Elk Hills oil boom; letters, pamphlet & news clipping (June & Oct. 1964) re/ concerns of the softwood lumber industry & new size for light framing construction lumber; a letter (2/14/64) from the Secretary of Interior to Wilson re/ sending him a copy of the revised Pacific Southwest Water Plan; letters (3/64) from Western Salt Company, The National Assn. of Manufactures & Wilson re/ these industrial enterprises’ opposition to S.649 and H. R. 3166 which would establish a water supply and pollution control federal system; a letter (2/28/64 from Donald Baldwin (National Lumber Manufacturers Assn.) & attached copy of a statement re/ an acceptance of a Dept. of Commerce proposal on green sizes of softwood lumber; a letter (4/15/64) from Donald Baldwin to Wilson & excerpts from the Congressional Record – Appendix re/ letters related to the Proposed Revision of American Standards for Softwood Lumber; letters (Jan., Mar. & May 1964), a promotional pamphlet supporting CA Prop. 1 & a Citizens Committee On Natural Resources brochure –“How Much Do You Care About Outdoor America?” re/ H.R. 3846, the Land and Water Conservation Act; letters (May & June, 1964) re/ the Dept. of Water and Power, City of Los Angeles – opposition to Secretary Udall’s rationing order for Colorado River users; letters (May-June, 1964) re/ further commentary on Pacific Southwest Water Act from City of El Cajon and the Metropolitan Water Dist. of Los Angeles; letters & news clipping (June-July 1964) re/ La Mesa Chamber of Commerce’s concern about the Administration’s Residual Oil Policy vs. mining coal in Appalachia; memorandum (10/30/64) & 4 page copy of The Monthly Reporter of the National Rivers and Harbors Congress (Oct. 1964, Vol. VII, No. 10) re/ support for “a larger proportion of the Annual Federal Budget to the use and conservation of water in the United States.”
