Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, memos, notes, news clippings, reports, news releases, Leaflet 435 & other items. These are not filed consecutively. Examples are: letters (2/55) from J. W. Sefton, Jr. (President, San Diego Trust & Savings Bank), Wilson & Thruston B. Morton (Asst. Secretary of State) re/ Mr. Sefton’s trip with Dr. Hubbs to discover and identify Guadalupe fur seals, their need for protection and possible use in the future for commercial purposes; a letter (2/18/55) from Arthur F. Fischer (Dir., Natural History Museum, S.D.) & Wilson’s reply (3/4/55) re/ “the need for conservation of the California fur seal;” letters (July-Sept. 1955) re/ interest of Star-Kist Foods, Inc. in a trip to Ghana & Wilson’s assistance through Dept. of State in facilitating a visit: letters & resolution (5/59) re/ Aquatic Resources Committee’s interest in restoring the presently depleted Klamath River salmon fishery; letters (Feb.-Mar. 1959) re/ the Lakeside Sportsman Club & their interest in the proposed Cibola Valley channelization of the Colorado River near Blythe, California; stapled packet of letters, news clipping, statement on “Colorado River ‘Squatters’ Important and Urgent” from the San Diego County Wildlife Federation & other sources (Jan.-Mar. 1959) re/ more concerned responses as to the proposed Colorado River channelization project; stapled packet of letters, a report, news information, excerpt from Field and Stream (1957-1959) re/ responses to inquiry from National City constituents Mr. and Mrs. Raleigh V. Brown and their apprehension concerning the Bureau of Reclamation’s activities in the “Madison River Basin, Montana that may impair the sport fishery resources of that stream;” more letters (1957 & 1959) re/ constituent concerns about Madison River Basin in Montana; news release from the Fish and Wildlife Service, Dept. of the Interior (8/2/56) re/ “United States Expends $13,975,000 in Fiscal 1956 on Fishery Research and Allied Services” & a copy of Fishery Leaflet 435 – “Major Commercial Fisheries with Data on Research Expenditures – A Series of Statistical Tables” (May 1956, 20 pp.); letter & a copy of a resolution from the Western Mining Council of San Diego (11/57) re/ opposition to withdrawal of lands in S.D. County – such as McCain Valley, Otay Mt. & in the Jacumba area for wildlife management; a packet of corresp. (2/62) & 11 pages from U.S. Code of Regulations – Public Land Order re/ “California – Establishing Certain National Cooperative Land and Wildlife Management Areas” – “a proposal to withdraw approximately 178,610 acres of public lands in California for wildlife conservation purposes.”
