Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, news releases, memorandum, postal cards, an excerpt from Congressional Record-House, FPC dockets & a news clipping. Examples are: copies of letters, statements from the Dept. of the Interior & a Sketches newsletter (Jan.-Feb. 1956) re/ controversy over recent Oil and Gas Leasing in Wildlife Refuges; a letter (3/27/57) from constituent William F. LaMonte (Fewel & Co. Investment Securities) & Wilson’s reply (4/1/57) re/ discussion over another Natural Gas Bill similar to the one vetoed by President Eisenhower last year; letters (8/5/57) from constituents Mr. & Mrs. William J. Bartch & Wilson’s reply (8/13/57) re/ opposition to legislation removing Federal control over large gas producing companies; a letter (6/10/57) from constituent Elmer Glaser (Elm’s Inc.) & Wilson’s reply (6/25/57) re/ conservative support of a National Gas Bill and opposition to Federal Aid to Education Bill; memorandum (3/6 /57) & attached copy of a Federal Power Commission news release “Docket No. G-2016” re/ “FPC Approves Settlement of Southern Counties Gas Company Rate Increase Case” – this included SDG&E; a letter (8/8/57) from constituent Eva Mac Donagh Smith & Wilson’s reply (8/15/57) re/ her opposition to removing Federal control over large gas producing companies & Wilson’s reply that he intended to support the end of federal regulation of any so-called competing fuels; a postal card (8/5/57) from constituents Mr. and Mrs. Carl Majors & Wilson’s reply (8/15/57) re/ opposition to removal of federal control over large gas companies and Wilson’s reply that he welcomed the end of federal control over these companies; letters (6/27 & 7/2/59) & attached copy of pages 10327-28 of the Congressional Record—House, June 19, 1957 re/ Wyoming Congressman Keith Thomson’s request for Wilson’s support of H. R. 7787 & Thomson’s speech in the House for his legislation which features an attempt to curb Dept. of Interior cancelling oil and gas leases; stapled packet containing letters &FPC docket materials (Jan.-Feb. 1959) re/ “The Trans-western Pipelines Company, a Delaware Corporation, has pending before the Federal Power Commission, a petition for a permit to transport natural gas from the Texan Panhandle and the Four Corners area, to California;” a letter (8/4/59) from C. O. Voigt (President, Stearns-Roger Manufacturing Co.) & Wilson’s reply (8/10/59) re/ “the problems which exist with respect to the conservation of helium in the United States;” letters (July-Aug. 1959) re/ responses to inquiry from Carlos Travares (Burgener-Travares ) & the Union Oil Company of California in contacting Global Marine Exploration (Mohole Project) as to offshore drilling; letters & office note (Oct.-Nov. 1959) re/ Dept. of interior response to inquiry from constituent Mrs. Alma K. Jackson as to oil production from leases in the State of Oklahoma; a letter (4/28/60) from Louis A. Rozzoni (President, California Farm Bureau Federation) to Wilson re/ concerns about Federal Power Commission’s delay in adequately monitoring natural gas price increases for consumer protection; 2 letters & a pamphlet (2/60) re/ the Independent Petroleum Assn. of America’s “Oil and Gas Depletion Facts - No. 3 ‘A History of Percentage Depletion’” which allegedly promotes the value of the oil depletion program to the national interest; letters & a newspaper editorial (Mar.-May 1961) re/ FPC, natural gas rate increases and constituent complaints; a letter (7/7/61) from N.R. Sutherland (President, Pacific Gas and Electric Company) to Wilson re/ “I am pleased to report that as of July 1, 1961 the Alberta-California Project, of which Pacific Gas and Electric Company is the principal sponsor, was 55% physically completed. . . this $300 million, 1,400-mile natural gas pipeline will be delivering 400 million cubic feet of gas per day at its terminus near Antioch, California, before the end of the year.” Of the $90 million Pipe Line Bonds that helped finance this project one-third of the bonds were purchased by CALPERS ($20 million) and STRS ($10 million). The series was due in 1986.
