Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, pamphlets, telegrams & news clippings. Examples are: a letter (11/1/61) from San Diego constituent Mrs. Harry Malin & Wilson’s reply (11/15/61) re/ Mrs. Malin’s view of obtaining peace by “complete controlled disarmament” & Wilson’s view that there should be “terms and conditions that will insure the total disarmament of all countries;” a letter (11/14/61) from San Diego constituent Mrs. Beatrice S. Blankenship & Wilson’s reply (11/29/61) re/ requesting Wilson to support the President’s efforts to achieve disarmament and restrict nuclear testing; a letter (2/8/62) from constituent Edwin A. Robinson & attached copy of an 1960 Methodist pamphlet “Peace and World Order” re/ Mr. Robinson’s opposition to the resumption of nuclear testing and the opportunity for a pause in the arms race; the remainder of the letters, postal cards, telegrams & news clippings in this folder can be divided as follows: 10 letters, telegrams & commentaries supporting disarmament, no nuclear weapons testing and other international efforts to restrict the testing of atomic weapons vs. dozens of letters, news clippings, telegrams, etc. favoring a military approach to disarmament, criticizing in various forms President Kennedy and others in the administration, opposing the UN and other international efforts that these conservatives believe the Soviet Union would take advantage of. One can see in this folder’s collection why Wilson continued to be reelected by his conservative constituency.
