Scope and Contents

A large collection of letters, notices, pamphlets, telegrams, statements, office notes, news clippings, periodical excerpts, Congressional documents & news releases. These are not sorted in chronological order. Examples are: Two letters (3/20/53) from newly elected Congressman Bob Wilson to Clair W. Burgener & Harvey B. Tyndall congratulating both for their victories in a recent primary election. Also commentaries on local San Diego issues; a 2 page letter (1/17/53) from La Mesa constituent Leslie E. Gehres (The Constitutional Foundation) to Wilson & an attached copy of a “Call To Meeting” notice from the California Republican State Centeral Committee (1/16/53) re/ “congratulations on your assignment to the Armed Services Committee!” and other personal and political commentaries from Gehres; stapled packet containing letters (1954) & a U. S 1953 Department of Agriculture, Forest Service pamphlet – “Shasta Lake Recreation Area” re/ the attempts of constituent Otto C. Kiessig (Floray Electronic Advertising, Inc.) to obtain a permit and lease to establish a resort at Lake Shasta; pages 13 & 14 from Point Newsweekly (Oct. 28, 1954) re/ “Political Wheel – Politicus” commentary on Wilson; copy of a letter (10/31/55) from Walter J. Puhn (Forest Supervisor, Cleveland National Forest, U.S. Forest Service) to Wilson re/ commentary on San Diego County Wildlife Federation’s resolution; letters (10/56) re/ Wilson and Air Force response to suggestion by constituent Paul Ecke (The California Poinsettia Grower, Encinitas, CA) that Air Force tanker planes be used to assist the Forestry Service in putting out fires, especially those caused by Air Force jets; letters (12/56) from Wilson & Walter J. Puhn (Forest Supervisor, Cleveland National Forest) re/ “At the request of Earl Roberts, Co-Chairman of the Citizens Forestry Study Group of San Diego County, I am sending you descriptive leaflets of two events of this year’s forest fire season” as to the use of air tankers -- the jet-plane caused fire in San Bernardino National Forest and the Pine Mountain fire near Lake Henshaw and the Cornwell fire near Lake Elsinore; letters (Oct. & Dec. 1955) from Dr. J. B. Askew (Dir. of Public Health, County of San Diego), Wilson & Walter J.Puhn (Forest Supervisor) re/ unsanitary condition at the San Luis Rey Camp and the problem of limited funds; stapled packet of telegrams, letters, notes, press release & “Advance Copy Summary of MISSION 66 Objectives and Program for CABRILLO NATIONAL MONUMENT” (Feb.-Apr. 1956); 2 telegrams (4/56) re/ Wilson’s support for increased funds to U. S. Service for recreational, range, wildlife, soil and water management; a letter (1/21/56) from the Citizens Forestry Study Group of San Diego County & Wilson’s reply (2/10/56) re/ the need to increase the National Forest budget for fire control as well as to sustain other needs; stapled packet of letters & postal card (Oct.-Dec. 1954) re/ responses to inquiry from constituent Raymond S. Toole (General Insurance) as to establishing a resort at Lake Mead; letters (July-Aug. 1955) re/ responses to inquiry from constituent J.W. Sefton, Jr. (President, S.D. Trust & Savings Bank) as to special rock formations in the Cleveland National Forces and long commentary from Edward F. Terrar, Jr. (Wilson’s Admin. Asst.) on agricultural surplus, price supports and other related information; letters (Sept.-Oct. 1954) re/ responses to constituent Robert E. Bender’s complaint that with the population increase in San Diego recreational opportunities in the Cleveland National Forest have suffered; letters, notes, news clipping, periodical excerpt and business brochure from Californian Electric Works (Sept.-Oct. 1955) re/ an appeal to Wilson from fellow goose hunters to the threat that the Army might acquire the Kofa Game Refuge near Yuma; a National Park Service press release for May 29, 1956 re/ “National Park Service Outlines Mission 66 for Nine California Areas;” letters & a Resolution (Apr. & May 1956) re/ County Bd. of Supervisors requesting support for additional appropriations for Cleveland National Forest; letters (10/56) re/ J. W. Sefton, Jr. (President, S.D. Trust & Savings Bank) appeals to Senator Humphrey and Congressman Wilson for more wilderness preservation on a national level; stapled packet of letters, memorandum, government documents, statistical data & other items (1956-1957) re/ “proposal to establish, in Cleveland National Forest, a Federal Honor Camp for about 280 inmates” at a cost of $100,000; letters (Nov. & Dec. 1956) re/ Wilson response to letter from H. D. Bowman, Jr. (V.P. , Trepte, Const. Co.) as to using military aircraft to aid in forest fire fighting; a copy of “Jet Fire . . . A brief story of the McKinley Mountain fire which burned in the San Bernardino Mountain Playgrounds and Watershed, San Bernardino National Forest” & a copy of “Air Tankers . . . . a new tool for forest fire fighting,” Forest Service, Dept. of Agriculture (1956); letters (3/57) re/ Wilson’s response to J. W. Sefton, Jr.’s appeal to create more national parks to preserve historical and natural areas because “With our rapid growth in population the land area of the United States is shrinking;” 3 letters (June & July, 1957) from Howard R. Stagner (Acting Chief, MISSION 66 Staff, National Park Service) to Wilson re/ copies of MISSION 66 booklets and facts. These are not in this folder.
